Mr. Mitchell earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from Tennessee State University in Nashville in 1981, having previously obtained an associate's degree in medical technology from Nashville State Technical Institute, which is now known as Nashville State Community College. After substitute teaching for several years, he decided on a career in medical technology in 1996 after consulting with Dr. Philip Mowrey, the former director of cytogenetics at the Laboratory Corporation of America (Labcorp) in Burlington, North Carolina. Licensed by the Tennessee Department of Health, Mr. Mitchell attributes Dr. Mowrey with inspiring him to continue in the field and refers to his interview with Dr. Mowrey as the highlight of his career.
Mr. Mitchell has excelled as a technologist in chromosomal analysis for Labcorp for the past 25 years, working mainly in the oncology department. He attributes his success to the fact that he has enjoyed the job and the people with whom he has worked. Mr. Mitchell has been additionally affiliated with the Fairfield Missionary Baptist Church and the American Society for Clinical Pathologists.
The father of five children, Mr. Mitchell intends to retire within the coming years. His motto is "Love what you're doing and do what you love." Furthermore, Mr. Mitchell believes his decades-spanning career as a medical technologist has been extremely rewarding.
