Having earned the distinguished title of a professor emeritus, Dr. Huerta taught physics at the University of Miami (UM) in Miami, Florida, between the years of 1972 and 2020. During this time, he chaired the department for six years, beginning in 1980. Renowned for his extensive expertise, Dr. Huerta was recognized on campus for his passion for the sciences and for inspiring so many young minds.

Likewise, he notably received numerous research grants in support of his studies from such organizations as the National Science Foundation and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. Since embarking upon his career, Dr. Huerta has been active with several prominent professional organizations, including the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and the American Physical Society.
Prior to his tenure at UM, Dr. Huerta spent two years as a research scientist with the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University between 1970 and 1972. While teaching, he notably excelled as an associate program manager for the National Science Foundation in Washington from 1977 to 1978 and had the opportunity to serve as a visiting research scientist at the National Distance Education University in Madrid during 1986. Furthermore, Dr. Huerta taught at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands from 1992 until 1993.
Born in Cuba, Dr. Huerta grew up with an affinity for the sciences, particularly chemistry and physics. Once he arrived in the U.S., he began studying at California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1965. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Huerta earned a Doctor of Philosophy in physics at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida, in 1969.
