Yaw L. Obeng has been Inducted into the Prestigious Marquis Who's Who Biographical Registry

    KANSAS CITY, MO, June 17, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Yaw L. Obeng has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Mr. Obeng's accomplishments in education are certainly noteworthy for recognition. As an educational leader he has held impactful and influential roles globally. He has had the distinct privilege of being selected as superintendent in Canada and the U.S. Demonstrating improvement of student achievement and emotional well-being which has prepared young people for a global economy. Mr. Obeng had led educational expeditions and partnerships outside of North America in locations such as Africa, Israel, and China. A highlight was when Mr. Obeng was honored with an invitation to present a keynote address at the Beijing Education Symposium.

While attending high school, Mr. Obeng aspired to pursue a career in education. Having already begun mentoring and working with younger students, he decided such a path would be ideal to combine his love of learning and youth engagement. Mr. Obeng received a Bachelor of Arts and Science in education and a Diploma in Advanced Undergraduate Studies from the University of New Brunswick. He then successfully pursued a Master of Education in Administrative Leadership and Counselling Psychology from the University of Toronto.

After fulfilling multiple educational roles from teacher, guidance counselor, curriculum coach and district equity lead, Mr. Obeng began his career as the superintendent of education for the Halton District School Board. He subsequently served as an adjunct professor at the University of Vermont and as the superintendent of schools for the Burlington School District. Presently, Mr. Obeng works as superintendent in Kansas City on behalf of the Hickman Mills School District. The first consolidated school district in Missouri.

In his current position, Mr. Obeng manages an executive team and works diligently to promote student achievement. He also oversees human resources, curriculum and instruction, special education, school facilities, food services and the resolution of legal issues. Throughout the course of his career, he has been most proud of his success as an equity leader. He has helped develop students from low to high achievers, and improved mathematics and English scores across the board. In addition, Mr. Obeng has developed enrichment and innovative opportunities in several school districts.

As an accomplished educator, Mr. Obeng became the first principal of African descent in the District of Toronto in 2001. Civically, he has been active with many organizations such as: Chamber of Commerce, United Way, Hospitals-Community Health care and the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary School Education. Mr. Obeng was also appointed to the Mayor's Education Committee and funded and founded the "Above and Beyond Fund" offering awards to exceptional students.

Mr. Obeng maintains his affiliation with international and national associations. He was the first Canadian superintendent accepted to the National Association of School, Superintendents. Other memberships include the National Association of Black Educators, the American Association of School Administrators, Ontario College of Teachers, the Association of School Curriculum and Development and the Missouri Superintendents Association. He has attributed his professional success to perseverance and resilience. In the coming years, he plans to engage in the next phase of his career. Ultimately, Mr. Obeng would like to look back at his tenure and see that he made a positive impact on others through his work.
