Immensely dedicated to his crafts within the arts and entertainment industries, Mr. Avery has found success as a playwright since 1989. Prior to dedicating himself full-time to playwriting, from 1970 to 1973, he worked as a freelance reporter of The Sentinel-Record and New Era, both in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Avery served in the United States Navy from 1973 to 1977, where he participated in the rescue and first stage relocation of Vietnamese refugees while aboard the USS Denver in 1975.

Well regarded in his field, Mr. Avery has penned a number of works, including "Burning Bridges" in 1999, "Insidious" in 1992, "Because" in 1991 and "Hungry: Three Plays" in 1991. Moreover, he was the production partner of "Viva la Causa," a documentary released by the Southern Poverty Law Center in 2008, and "Ever Again," a documentary released by Moriah Films in 2005. Civically engaged as well, Mr. Avery has contributed as the founding sponsor of the Statue of Liberty Museum of Ellis Island since 2018, the National Museum of American Jewish History since 2009, the Flight 93 National Memorial since 2006 and the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial since 2005.

A member of the president's council of the World Jewish Congress since 2005, Mr. Avery has remained active as a member of the scholarship committee of the American Indian Education Fund since 2005, AmeriCares since 2004, and the National Republican Congressional Committee since 2004. He has also maintained affiliation with the International Rescue Committee since 2004, the Founders Circle of the Vada Sheid Community Development Center of Arkansas State University since 2002, and as a founding member of The National Campaign for Tolerance since 2002 and a member of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum since 2001.

To remain abreast of developments in his areas of interest, Mr. Avery is a member of such organizations as the Academy of American Poets, the American Film Institute and the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, of which he is a national patron. Selected for inclusion in the Wall of Honor of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in 2018 and the Republican Presidential Honor Roll of the National Republican Congressional Committee in 2005, he was presented with the Medallion of Commitment from the World Jewish Congress in 2013. Likewise, he earned the Gateway Award from Save Ellis Island, Inc., in 2012, the Leadership Award from the World Jewish Congress Foundation in 2011, the Nahum Goldmann Leadership Award of the World Jewish Congress Foundation in 2007, the American Spirit Medal from the National Republican Senatorial Committee in 2007, and the Congressional Order of Merit from 2006 to 2007. Mr. Avery has been highlighted in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who in the World.
