Dr. Robert Hughes Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Political and Leadership Education

Dr. Hughes retired from the National Center on Education and the Economy's National Institute for School Leadership in 2014

POTOMAC, MD, June 22, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Robert Hughes has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

After earning a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from Our Lady of Providence in 1963, Dr. Hughes completed graduate studies in literature and linguistics from the University of Rhode Island (MA, 1969) and The Catholic University of America (PhD, 1973), with additional graduate studies in linguistics at Georgetown University. During these years and following into his military career, Dr. Hughes taught as a visiting lecturer at Catholic University, St. Joseph's College, George Mason University, the University of Colorado, and the University of Maryland (overseas). During the years 1969 to 1995, Dr. Hughes served in the United States Air Force where he rose to the rank of Colonel. As an initial assignment, Dr. Hughes was an associate professor at the USAF Academy for five years.

Over the decades, he also gained deep expertise in politico-military affairs and professional experience in education and leadership studies through assignments with the Inter-American Defense College, the Air Staff, the Joint Staff, the Office of the Secretary of Defense, and the US Mission to NATO in Brussels. Upon return from Brussels, Dr. Hughes graduated from the National War College (NWC) with emphasis on strategic studies; he was then assigned to the NWC where he served as dean of faculty and academic programs until 1995.

Thereafter for Cubic Applications Inc., he served as director of executive leadership programs for Defense, Intelligence, and commercial clients—for example, developing the curriculum and faculty preparations for the Asia-Pacific Center in Hawaii. In 2001, he was invited to be the East Coast director and later became the President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute for School Leadership (NISL), a company within the National Center on Education and the Economy. Starting from an idea, NISL had a substantial presence in 26 states and had served over 15,000 school principals and district superintendents in executive leadership skills by the time Dr. Hughes retired in early 2014.

Through the vast reach and depth of his knowledge, experience, and practice, Dr. Hughes has contributed to many fields through scholarly books, opinion pieces, speechwriting for very senior officials, and cutting-edge essays in linguistics, literature, curriculum development, politico-military affairs, and strategic assessments. He is particularly proud of his work entitled SDI: A View from Europe (1990).

While his many careers spanned several fields and had significant highlights, Dr. Hughes is most proud to have created curriculum for and taught strategic thinking, executive leadership, space policy, descriptive linguistics, Shakespearian plays, and politico-military affairs at six colleges and universities. During his time in the Air Force, Colonel Hughes was twice awarded the Defense Superior Service Medal and retired with the Legion of Merit. Looking towards the future, Dr. Hughes intends to publish several more books and continue lecturing periodically.
