An accomplished history scholar, with nearly forty years in his professional network, Dr. Duus has been recognized for scholarly achievements, leadership qualities intellectual credentials, and successes in his field. When he retired as Bonsall Professor of History at Stanford in 2003 Dr. Duus was known as a leading expert on modern Japan, particularly its politics, its foreign relations, and its prewar colonial expansion into Asia. These interests were piqued by his growing up during the war with Japan in the Pacific and East Asia in 1941-1945.
An educator for close to four decades. Dr. Duus began his teaching career at Washington University in Saint Louis between 1964 and 1966. He then taught at his alma mater, Harvard University, as assistant professor of history from 1966 to 1970, and as an associate professor of history in the graduate school of Claremont University. The remainder of his teaching career was spent as full professor in the history department at Stanford University
He was also active in the development of Japanese and Asian Studies. In 1974, Dr. Duus began serving as the executive secretary for the Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies, an American-financed advanced Japanese language school in Tokyo or over 15 years until 1990. At the same time, Dr. Duus was also active in the promotion of international studies by serving on the board of directors of the Committee for International Exchange of Scholars in Washington from 1987 until 1991.
An award-winning author, Dr. Duus published several books during his scholarly career. His first work, "Party Rivalry and Political Change in Taisho Japan," focused on Japanese parliamentary politics in the 1920s. Then came two volumes offering overviews of long periods of Japanese history, "Feudalism in Japan:" (three editions (1969, 1976, 1993 and "Modern Japan" (two editions 1976, 1997). In 1995 he published a case study of modern Japanese imperialism: "The Abacus and the Sword: The Japanese Penetration of Korea, 1895-1910," which won several awards.
After earning a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, in History in 1955, Dr. Duus served for two years in the U.S. Army. Following his departure from the service, he received a Master of Arts in Asian Studies at the University of Michigan. In 1965 he concluded his degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in 1965.
Dr. Duus was elected as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In support of his academic commitments, he played an active role in the Association of Asian Studies, the major national organization in the field, where he was one of the original members and an active participant in its activities, serving on its board of directors as well as its vice-president and president. In addition, Dr. Duus served on the board of editors of the American Historical Association and was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
A National Endowment of the Humanities senior fellow, Dr. Duus was also a Japan Foundation postdoctoral fellow, Fulbright research fellow and Governor Burns visiting fellow at the University of Hawaii. Among his recognitions, he received several accolades in 1996 for his writing contributions, including an Akira Iriye International Book Award and a Hiromi Arisawa Book Prize. The Japanese government in 2012 recognized Dr. Duus' contributions to the development of Japanese studies and understanding of Japan in the United States by awarding him the Order of the Rising Sun, one of its highest honors.
