Driven to pursue a career in service to others, Mr. Mort earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science, magna cum laude, from the University of Denver in 1971. Subsequently, he began as a staff associate with the National Center for State Courts, where he remained for three years before joining the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit as a program analyst and assistant circuit executive. While with the Court of Appeals, he completed a Doctor of Jurisprudence at Brooklyn Law School in 1986. Upon graduating, he joined the Office of the Corporation Counsel in New York as assistant corporate counsel.
Later, Mr. Mort joined Goodman & Zuchlewski LLP in 1996, where he handled all aspects of employment law cases in state and federal courts. Backed by his extensive expertise, he excels today as of counsel for Kraus & Zuchlewski LLP. As of counsel since 2004, he represents clients in employment law matters and appears at mediations and arbitration proceedings. Mr. Mort has litigated eighteen cases to trial verdict or bench decision, all but one successfully. Due to his vast breadth of knowledge, he has contributed to such publications as The American Bar Association Journal of Labor & Employment Law, The New York State Bar Association Journal, The New York Law Journal, PLI Current, and the American Arbitration Association Dispute Resolution Journal.
Throughout his career, Mr. Mort has remained abreast of changes in the field through his memberships with the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers, the American Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association, the New York City Bar Association and the National Employment Lawyers Association. He has spoken at the American Bar Association Annual Labor and Employment Law Conference, the Practising Law Institute, Annual Meetings of the New York State Bar Association, Lawline, Fall Meetings of the New York State Bar Association Labor & Employment Law Section and conferences of the National Employment Lawyers Association/New York.
During law school, Mr. Mort was honored with the Best Constitutional Law Student Award from Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft. Recently, he was inducted into Law Dragon, and, with Kraus & Zuchlewski LLP, was recognized in U.S. News & World Report, both in 2020. Although his career has been filled with highlights, he is particularly proud of winning a trial where he represented the warden of a prison who had attempted to rescue a corrections officer who was being assaulted by inmates. Despite being up against one of the top firms in New York City, they won the case. Looking ahead, Mr. Mort intends to experience the continued growth and success of his career.
