Ellyn M. Kerr Recognized by Marquis Who's Who for Excellence in Special Education

Ms. Kerr has excelled as an instructor and a grant writer for the New York City Department of Education



    BROOKLYN, NY, June 30, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Ellyn M. Kerr has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

After obtaining an associate degree from Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn, Ms. Kerr continued her education with a Bachelor of Arts from the City University of New York and a Master of Science in special education for children with emotional and behavioral disorders from Hunter College in New York in 2001. She was inspired to become a special education teacher by Dr. Charles Hedbring, a colleague and a mentor who developed a cloud-based software to assist students with disabilities. Ms. Kerr was additionally influenced by her experiences with her two children.

Since 1991, Ms. Kerr has flourished as a special education teacher with the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE). In this positions, she provides instruction and supports facilitating the participation of students with disabilities in the regular classroom. Additionally, Ms. Kerr has made an impact with the NYCDOE as a grant writer as well as a sustainability coordinator, a role in which she advises management and staff on program development.

Ms. Kerr has accrued a number of accolades over the course of her career. She was notably selected for inclusion in Phi Theta Kappa during her time at Kingsborough Community College and Kappa Delta Pi, International Honor Society in Education while enrolled at Hunter College in 2001. Furthermore, Ms. Kerr was presented with the Service and Learning Award for the students of P77K from the NYCDOE in 2015.

Ms. Kerr has found much success as a member of a number of service organizations. She was proudly affiliated with Common Cents, a national organization that officiates the Penny Harvest program which aids in the development of student's social philanthropy, from 2006 to 2015. Likewise, Ms. Kerr has volunteered for Penny Harvest, an educational institution that designs innovative school-based programs to foster ethical citizenship and student leadership.

Ms. Kerr cites her grant writing among the highlights of her impressive professional ventures, from which NYCDOE has been able to obtain funds to establish critical developmental programs. She also fondly recalls her volunteer work for Covenant House, a privately-funded agency based in New York that provides shelter, food, immediate crisis care and an array of other services to homeless and runaway youth. While she is looking forward to retirement in the coming years, Ms. Kerr hopes to become involved with animal-assisted therapy.
