When she was young, Dr. Nieves-Cruz's mother was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome. She was very weak at the time and suffered from many symptoms, which meant she had to go to the hospital for frequent appointments. When she would visit the hospital with her mother, she became inspired by the collaborative environment of nurses and doctors from different specialties. Dr. Nieves-Cruz was particularly fascinated by the level of teamwork required to brainstorm treatment and care for her mother's condition, which motivated her to pursue a career in medicine.
Dr. Nieves-Cruz subsequently earned a bachelor's degree in general science from the University of Puerto Rico and a Doctor of Medicine from the Ponce Health Sciences University. She likewise completed a summer internship in Puerto Rico, a research internship at the School of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Rochester and a residency in emergency medicine at the Orlando Regional Medical Center. Beginning her career as a physician with the Sacred Heart Hospital System, Dr. Nieves-Cruz currently excels as an attending physician at Broward Health Medical Center.
As a qualified professional, Dr. Nieves-Cruz is also certified through the American Board of Emergency Medicine. Prior to her residency, she had to work very hard to adapt to English as her primary language in a residency with classmates who were top of the line student doctors. She was able to maintain excellent scores throughout her training and was recruited into one of the toughest programs in the country. In her career, Dr. Nieves-Cruz has found success as a faculty member at Florida International University and Nova Southeastern University as well as the head of the Simulation Laboratory in Fort Lauderdale.
On a daily basis, Dr. Nieves-Cruz treats patients and works with other allied professionals in a level 1 trauma center. She also manages and teaches medical students with a focus on trauma emergencies. As a respected voice in her field, Dr. Nieves-Cruz previously conducted a lecture titled "Endocrine Emergencies: Remembering the Zebras" for medical staff, physicians and students on the diagnosis and treatment of common endocrine emergencies.
For her exceptional efforts over the years, Dr. Nieves-Cruz previously accepted an award for both her undergraduate and graduate research. She was nominated for the Top 10% of Medical Students by the Theta chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha in Puerto Rico. Dr. Nieves-Cruz was recently honored for Excellence in Business & Healthcare with South Florida Business & Wealth.
In her community, Dr. Nieves-Cruz has been active with several local clinics and charity organizations, as well as Calvary Chapel. She maintains her professional affiliation with the American College of Emergency Physicians, the American Academy of Emergency Medicine, and the National Scholars Honors Society. Over the years, she has attributed her professional success to hard work, discipline, dedication and faith. Looking toward the future, Dr. Nieves plans to be a part of the first graduating residency class at her hospital and eventually obtain a fellowship in integrative medicine.
