Marquis Who's Who Recognizes Dr. McGinnis for Excellence in Foreign Language Research

    SILVER SPRING, MD, July 02, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Scott McGinnis, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Over the past 18 years, Dr. McGinnis has served as a senior academic advisor and full professor at the Defense Language Institute, a U.S. Department of Defense educational and research institution, at its Washington, D.C., office. An expert in Chinese language and literature, his tenure in academia began to take shape in 1985 as a graduate teaching associate at the Ohio State University in Columbus, and as an assistant professor of Chinese at the University of Oregon between 1990 and 1993. Garnering a reputation for his incredible knowledge in the field, Dr. McGinnis continued at the University of Maryland for 10 years, in his last four as the Executive Director of the National Council of Less Commonly Taught Languages and an associate at the National Foreign Language Center.

A skilled educator and passionate speaker, Dr. McGinnis had the opportunity to serve as the McDermott endowed chair and guest professor of Chinese at the U.S. Military Academy during 2003, which was a considerable honor. He also lectured to University of Pennsylvania graduate education students during the summer months of 2000 and 2002 and taught elementary Chinese during the summer of 1994 at the Chinese School at Middlebury College. Additionally, Dr. McGinnis was made the principal instructor of first-level Chinese at the East Asian Summer Language Institute at Indiana University between 1988 and 1989.

Boasting an extensive writing portfolio, Dr. McGinnis has contributed chapters to six books, served in various editorial capacities for a multitude of scholarly journals, contributed several monographs, and completed many book reviews in his field. Some of his current work includes activity on the editorial board of Applied Language Learning and as a reviewer of the Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development and Foreign Language Annals. Besides his writing contributions, Dr. McGinnis has become a frequently invited speaker to dozens of events, where he has shared his knowledge and expertise with other experts in the field.

Blending his civic duties with his professional life, Dr. McGinnis has found great reward as a longtime advisory board member of the China Education Tours Academic Programs since 1996, a study abroad organization originally founded in 1982. In years past, he has lent his expertise as the co-chairman of the University Affiliated Research Center Special Interest Group, on the board of directors of the Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, as an advisory board member of the Cross-Culture Education Center of Washington and Chairman of The College Board Chinese Language Test Development Committee. In addition to countless other commitments, Dr. McGinnis also participated in many workshops and seminars and, most notably, served four years in the U.S. Navy.

Highly educated, Dr. McGinnis attained a Diploma in Basic Chinese through the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in 1978. He subsequently received a Bachelor of Science in history at the University of the State of New York (now Excelsior College) in 1980, a Master of Arts in Chinese language at the Ohio State University in 1984 and a Certificate in Advanced Studies at the Beijing Language Institute in 1985. Continuing his studies, Dr. McGinnis took additional courses at the Inter-University Program for Chinese Languages Studies in Taipei, Taiwan, from 1988 to 1989 before ultimately earning a Doctor of Philosophy in East Asian languages and literatures at his alma mater, the Ohio State University, in 1990.

Apart from his full-time commitments, Dr. McGinnis has been a member of several industry-related organizations, including the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language. He has also been active on numerous committees with the Modern Language Association and is a past president and former executive board member of the Chinese Language Teachers Association. Honoring his contributions, Dr. McGinnis received a Summer Research Award from the Office of Graduate Studies and Research in 1995 and was recognized as a Lilly-Center for Teaching Excellence Teaching Fellow by the Office of the Associate Provost for Academic Affairs and for Undergraduate Studies at the University of Maryland between 1996 and 1997. Among other honors, he was recently bestowed with the A. Ronald Walton Award from the National Council of Less Commonly Taught Languages in 2016.
