Joseph R. Tucci, MD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

A renowned endocrinologist and educator for more than 50 years, Dr. Tucci has been active in the department of medicine at the Roger Williams Medical Center in Providence since 1969, having initially worked as the director of endocrinology and metabolism. As a tenured medical staff member, he also treats patients in his office that are suffering from various illnesses due to hormone imbalances and endocrine gland issues. Dr. Tucci's extensive career at the aforementioned center formerly included serving as the head of the endocrinology laboratory from 1969 to 1984 and the director of the Bone and Mineral Unit from 1984 to 2017.

Additionally, Dr. Tucci was appointed as the secretary-treasurer, vice president and president of the medical staff at the Roger Williams Medical Center. He further flourished as a trustee and the interim chairman for the department of medicine. In addition to his work in medicine, Dr. Tucci has excelled as a professor of medicine at Boston University since 1988 and a faculty member at Brown University since 1969.

Esteemed for his expertise, Dr. Tucci has consulted on behalf of Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island, for several local diabetes programs and with the Neighborhood Health Center between 1970 and 1999. He has also been recruited to a multitude of hospital and university committees, including the committee on academic affairs, the quality and credentialing committee and the faculty affairs committee. Dr. Tucci likewise found success as a member of the endocrine study section at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda and a co-director of a symposium on bone health at Boston University.

As a seasoned researcher in the medical field, Dr. Tucci has authored hundreds of endocrine and metabolic publications and endocrine and metabolic textbook chapters. The associate editor for Endo Trends from 2002 to 2011, he held the position of a reviewer for more than 15 professional journals, including Acta Endocrinologica, the American Journal of Medicine and Annals of Internal Medicine. Dr. Tucci remains aware of developments in his field as a member of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology, the Society for Clinical Densitometry, the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, the Clinical Diabetes Association of Rhode Island and the Endocrine Society.

Dr. Tucci initially earned an undergraduate degree, cum laude, at Brown University in 1955 and a medical degree at Boston University in 1959. Additional educational pursuits to his credit include an internship and residency in medicine at Saint Elizabeth's Hospital in Boston, a clinical fellowship in nephrology, metabolism and endocrinology at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and a fellowship in endocrinology and metabolism at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. Dr. Tucci subsequently completed a senior, third-year residency in endocrinology at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Washington, D.C., and a research fellowship in medicine at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

After completing his schooling, Dr. Tucci entered the U.S. Naval Reserve as a lieutenant commander between 1967 and 1968. He subsequently dedicated another year of service as a commander, research endocrinologist and head of the division of experimental medicine at the National Naval Medical Research Institute in Bethesda, Maryland until 1969. Notably board certified in internal medicine, endocrinology and metabolism, Dr. Tucci is a diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners and holds a medical license in the state of Rhode Island.

Selected by his peers, Dr. Tucci is a fellow of the American College of Endocrinology and the American College of Physicians. Among his many accolades, he received a Milton Hamolsky Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rhode Island chapter of the American College of Physicians in 2015 and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Boston University in 2009. He has consistently been recognized to a multitude of professional medical publications, including as a Top Doc in Rhode Island Magazine and among the Best Doctors as well as the Guide to America's Top Physicians. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Tucci has been cited in the 61st through 63rd editions of Who's Who in America.
