Peter J. Weina, PhD, MD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Weina is an infectious disease physician at Fort Belvoir Community Hospital and a Colonel in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Army, most recently serving as the Director of the Office of Research Protections for the Defense Health Agency (DHA) beginning in 2020. In this capacity, he oversees all human subject research worldwide in the military health system, as well as all veterinary research. The DHA is headquartered in Falls Church, Virginia, and supports uniformed services health care as a part of the Military Health System.

Apart from his lengthy medical and military career, Dr. Weina is a professor of medicine at F. Edward Herbert School of Medicine, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. First appointed as an assistant professor in 1989, he was promoted to associate professor in 2006 and to full professor in 2015. Dr. Weina served both as a professor of preventive medicine and biometrics as well as a professor of medicine during most of this time.

Enlisting in the military in 1976, Dr. Weina advanced through the grades from a private to a sergeant first class and became a second lieutenant in 1985. Stationed in such places as the Tallil Air Base in Iraq as commander of the 520th Theater Army Medical Laboratory, he also served at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Silver Spring, Maryland in several positions culminating as the Deputy Commander, the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center as the Chief of Research Protections, and the Office of the Under Secretary of the Defense as its Branch Chief of Regulatory Oversight from 2019 until 2021. During Dr. Weina's military career, he visited more than 40 countries.

Among his many accomplishments as a physician, Dr. Weina was a driving force behind the licensure of Intravenous Artesunate in May 2020 from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of severe malaria. Other contributions to his credit have included extensive research, which has resulted in the writing of more than 70 peer-reviewed journal articles, six book chapters and the co-authorship of several medical books, including "Antimalarial Drugs: Age of the Artemisinins" through Nova Science Publishers Inc. in 2011. Additionally, Dr. Weina was a reviewer and member of the editorial board for several scholarly journals.

As a loyal and committed member of the community, Dr. Weina has served as an ad hoc voting member on the pharmacy compounding advisory committee of the FDA at the Department of Health and Human Services since 2017 and a member of the antimicrobial drugs advisory committee since 2016. He formerly spent seven years as an assistant scoutmaster for his local Boy Scouts of America between 2012 and 2019 and was a crew chief and emergency medical technician for the Town of Madison Fire and Rescue between 1980 and 1983.

Dr. Weina received a Bachelor of Science in zoology in 1984, a Master of Science in zoology in 1985 and a Doctor of Philosophy in pathology and zoology in 1988 at the University of Wisconsin. He subsequently completed a Doctor of Medicine at the F. Edward Herbert School of Medicine, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, in 1996. Additional educational pursuits to Dr. Weina's credit include an internship and residency in internal medicine at the Tripler Army Medical Center and a fellowship in infectious disease at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Dr. Weina has been aligned with several academically-related organizations that have been instrumental in his career. These include the American Society of Parasitologists, the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States, the Infectious Disease Society of America and, among others, the Greater Washington Infectious Disease Society. For his many contributions as a service member, Dr. Weina was decorated with the Legion of Merit, a Soldiers Medal for Heroism, a Bronze Star, a Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and Army Meritorious Service Medal, and, among others, a National Defense Service Medal with One Bronze Star. He also received several honors in recognition of his work in the field and on behalf of his community, including a Federal Laboratory Consortium Excellence in Technology Transfer Award in 2021, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences Alumni Association in 2015 and a Citizen of the Year Award from the Montgomery County Fire Fighters in 2001.
