SAN FRANCISCO, CA, July 16, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Helen Elizabeth Voegele Gourley with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Ms. Gourley celebrated many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Having accrued seven decades of inimitable expertise in physics and science, Ms. Gourley garnered a laudable reputation as a voice to be listened to in her field of study. Ms. Gourley graduated valedictorian from John Marshall High School, and won several scholarships to college. Beginning her career, she graduated, with honors, from the University of Rochester in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science in physics, and subsequently found work as a research physicist at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center, where she worked from 1953 to 1955. Following this period, Ms. Gourley became a project manager at Beckman Instruments in 1955, after which she served throughout the 1960s as a senior scientist at Nuclear Research Instruments and a program manager on behalf of Quantic Industries.
After departing from Quantic Industries in 1971, Ms. Gourley went on to work as a consultant for several companies including Xerox and ILC technology. During this time she specialized in optics, the study of light, which shaped her future research in the field. Ms. Gourley founded the company System Sciences Group in 1991, and continued to design new optical technology relating to illumination for medical, military, and manufacturing instruments.
Ms. Gourley drew extensive recognition for her commitment to the field, and was presented with numerous accolades over the course of her career. In 1964, she was bestowed with the President's Award from the International Society for Optical Engineering. She served as president of the Optical Society of Northern California 1989–1990. For several years she taught a course in optoelectronics to adult students at Foothill College. In addition to her service to the scientific community, Ms. Gourley also served as a presenter of optics workshops thru Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) for middle school girls until 2019. She encouraged young women to pursue the sciences as a viable career path.
Sadly, Ms. Gourley passed away on March 17, 2021.
