Rodell with the Albert Nelson marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Rodell celebrates many years' experience in his profession, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. For nearly 30 years, Dr. Paul A. Rodell flourished as a professor in the history department of Georgia Southern University. His intellectual curiosity in history and in Southeast Asia was sparked by classes while an undergraduate at Northern Illinois University. After graduation he join the United States Peace Corps from 1968-1971 where he worked first as a provincial agriculture and community development volunteer in the Republic of the Philippines and then as a support staff member in that agency's Manila office. Subsequently, he attended graduate school at the Asian Center of the University of the Philippines for two years before returning home.

He continued graduate studies in history at the State University of New York at Buffalo where he earned an MA in 1982 and a Ph.D. in 1992. While still a graduate student he taught classes at SUNY/Buffalo and was an adjunct faculty member at the Buffalo branch of the New York State School of Industrial and Labor Relations based at Cornell University. Outside of the classroom he was one of the founders and principle organizers of a SUNY-wide union for graduate GAs and TAs, the Graduate Student Employees Union, Communication Workers of America.

At Georgia Southern University, Dr. Rodell taught courses on Southeast Asia such as "Islam in Southeast Asia" and "Vietnam, 236 BCE to the Present" as well as Japanese and Chinese history. In the Spring 2006 he was Visiting Professor of Asian Studies, Universidad de Veracruz, Mexico. Dr. Rodell has had an active publishing career with the 2001 book, Culture and Customs of the Philippines that received the Cecile B. Currey award from the Association of Third World Studies (now Association of Global South Studies) and he also edited a special issue on Southeast Asia for the Journal of Global South Studies in 2000 and a special section of the Journal of Third World Studies in 2015. He has authored ten book chapters, 31 journal articles and 30 book reviews and has given 36 conference presentations and 27 invited lectures. He received grants from the Fulbright-Hays program, the Luce Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the University of Michigan, the Japan Foundation, the Korea Foundation and the Department of Education.

Professional service has also played an important part of Dr. Rodell's career including Association of Global South Studies Executive Director (1992-2002) and Treasurer (2019-present). He has been an active member of the Philippine Studies Committee of the Association for Asian Studies as a board member, vice-chair (2006-2009), Chair (2009-2011), and Chair of the Grant Goodman Award committee (2013-2020). He also organized faculty development programs on Asia for college faculty in 1997, 1999, 2007, 2014, and 2018. He has served on five editorial boards, grant reviewer for the Department of Education and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
