C. Louis Bassano Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Public Service

Mr. Bassano retired from the New Jersey Senate in 2001



    NAPLES, FL, July 20, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- C. Louis Bassano has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Esteemed for his decades of versatile professional experience, Mr. Bassano is currently retired, having excelled as a member of the New Jersey Senate representing the 21st District between 1982 and 2001. Noted as an expert on health and human services, he attended dozens of meetings at the New Jersey State House and wrote more than 200 bills that later became law during his legislative tenure. Moreover, he focused greatly on school bus safety, having utilized his wealth of knowledge from the UCLA School Bus Safety Test to require seat belts on school buses, and wrote a $170 million bond issue that provided housing for the developmentally disabled in New Jersey. Prior to his election to the New Jersey Senate, Mr. Bassano served as a member of the New Jersey General Assembly from 1972 to 1973, and from 1975 to 1981. He was also Commissioner for the Department of Public Works and Fire Commissioner during his term on the Union Township Committee from 1975 to 1978.

Mr. Bassano and his wife Joan owned and operated H & I – Bassano Oil, a fuel distribution business, which he managed while purchasing and merging four additional oil companies, from 1984 to 2010. In his role, he generated business for fuel, diesel and heating services while his wife was responsible for the day-to-day operations as co-owner.

Graduating from Weequahic High School in 1960, Mr. Bassano subsequently completed coursework in business at Bloomfield College for more than two years. In addition to his primary professional efforts, he has been active as a board member for the Sammy Davis Junior National Liver Institute at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and a member of the Monorail Study Commission for Newark Liberty International Airport. He served as a member of the Israeli Trade Commission. Following his resignation from the New Jersey Senate, Mr. Bassano was appointed as head of community relations and project development with the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority.

During his time in the New Jersey Senate, Mr. Bassano found success as the Assistant Senate Majority Whip from 1987 to 1988, Senate Minority Whip in 1989 and the Assistant Senate Minority Leader from 1990 to 1991. Furthermore, he was Chairman of Health and Human Services, the Senior Citizens and Veterans' Affairs Committee, and Vice Chairman of the Women's Issues, Children and Family Services Committee. Upon his retirement from the New Jersey State Senate in 2001, the former Senator served on the Board of Directors of the New Jersey Mental Health Association and the Bridgeway Foundation Mental Health Board for 10 years. The former Senator also served two terms on the Overlook Hospital Foundation Board.

Mr. Bassano has been affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. Distinguished as a fourth degree knight of the Knights of Columbus, he has been associated with Union Lodge #1583 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks since 1964. A prolific charitable worker, he has also been involved as a fundraiser for the Union Hospital Foundation and the Girl Scouts of Washington Rock Council. A member of the Epilepsy Foundation of America, Mr. Bassano was further selected twice as the county chairman for the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society.

Attributing his success to the hard work ethic instilled in him by his parents, Mr. Bassano is equally grateful for the support of his wife, whose involvement with H & I Bassano Oil, afforded him the opportunity to devote more time to their community. Learning to campaign at an early age, he is exceptionally proud to have been elected to public office at the young age of 29, as well as his tireless work as an advocate for those with mental and physical disabilities. He is also an avid history enthusiast, having hosted historical tours in Nantucket, Massachusetts, and Naples, Florida, in recent years. Looking toward the future, Mr. Bassano hopes to cement his legacy as a determined and selfless figure in his various fields while supporting his wonderful children in their own respective careers.
