After earning a Bachelor of Science in Physiology from the University of Calcutta in 2003, Dr. Sen obtained a Master of Genetics in 2005. She began her career as a doctoral scholar at the Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute from 2005 to 2011. In 2011, Dr. Sen graduated with a doctorate from Jadavpur University. Between 2012 and 2013, Dr. Sen was active as a research associate at the Indian Institute of Chemical Biology, India. She later completed her postdoctoral fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas, USA from 2014 to 2019.
Since 2019, she has excelled as an assistant attending at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, USA. Dr. Sen's research is directed at understanding changes in cancer cells at the molecular level that contribute to their growth, metastasis and drug resistance. She then uses this knowledge to develop improved therapeutic strategies for clinically relevant molecular subsets of lung cancer.
Dr. Sen is the author of several peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts and has received independent grant funding from the Department of Defense, National Cancer Institute (NCI), Lung Cancer Research Foundation, and The International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, and others.
Dr. Sen has many accolades and honors to her credit, including the AAAS Martin and Rose Wachtel Cancer Research Award, 2021, 40 under 40 in Cancer Research Award in 2020, the Young Investigator Research Award at the Immuno-Oncology Young Investigators' Forum in 2018, the Maryanne Rosenstein Family fellowship in merkel cell carcinoma research in 2017, the Scholar-in-Training Award from the American Association of Cancer Research in 2016 and the Women in Cancer Research Scholar Award from the American Association of Cancer Research in 2015. Dr. Sen also accepted the Jeffrey Lee Cousins fellowship in lung cancer research from the MD Anderson Cancer Center from 2015 to 2018.
Dr. Sen is actively involved in outreach activities, mentoring, and is a passionate advocate of equal opportunity for women in STEM fields. She has served as the two-time president of the Association for Women in Science Gulf Coast Houston Chapter and currently on the leadership board of 500 Women Scientists NYC pod.
Dr. Sen attributes her success to her resilience in the face of failure and her belief that the work that she is doing for lung cancer research is her life's purpose. Her most notable achievement has been discovering that DNA damage response inhibition can actually be a vulnerability for lung cancer and identifying theraputic targets. She also patented an anti-cancer activity of stearylamine bearing cationic liposomal drug formulation. In the coming years, Dr. Sen hopes to find a sustainable cure for lung cancer, and she also aspires to win a Nobel Prize.
