Iris H. W. Engstrand, PhD has been Inducted into the Prestigious Marquis Who's Who Biographical Registry

Dr. Engstrand celebrates more than 50 years of professional excellence

    SAN DIEGO, CA, July 29, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Iris H. W. Engstrand, PhD has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Supported by decades of professional excellence, Dr. Engstrand, now retired, found success as a professor at the University of San Diego for nearly 50 years. The co-editor of the Journal of San Diego History from 2005 to 2019, she has served as a consultant for numerous local organizations, including the Museum of the Vaquero, KPBS Public Television and the Web de Anza of the Juan Bautista de Anza website. Well regarded for her extensive knowledge of the history of Spain, California and the West Coast, Dr. Engstrand has also maintained involvement in positions of high leadership with various museums and associations, including as a board director for the Maritime Museum of San Diego, director of the San Diego Natural History Museum and president of the Western History Association, to name only a few.

With a plethora of knowledge at her disposal, Dr. Engstrand has authored 25 books, numerous book chapters and 50 articles on her areas of expertise. Her award-winning books include "San Diego: California's Cornerstone," "Spanish Scientists in the New World: The Eighteenth Century Expeditions" and "William Wolfskill: Frontier Trapper to California Ranchero." Likewise, Dr. Engstrand's book reviews have appeared in scholarly journals, such as the Pacific Historical Review, American Historical Review, the Journal of the Americas, the Journal of the Southwest, Alaska History and the Columbia Journal of History, among many others.

Prior to embarking upon her impressive career, Dr. Engstrand pursued an education at the University of Southern California, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in history, a Master of Arts in history and a Doctor of Philosophy in history. Inducted into the California Women's Museum Hall of Fame in 2019, the Mortar Board National Honor Society in 2017 and the Alumni Hall of Fame of Orange Coast Community College in 1999, she was further recognized as a Woman of Impact by the University of San Diego in 2016. From the Western History Association, Dr. Engstrand was presented with the Award of Merit in 2001 and the Bolton Award for the Best Article on the Spanish Borderlands in a Scholarly Journal in 2000.

As a further testament to her success and longevity in the field, Dr. Engstrand accepted numerous research grants from the University of San Diego, Fulbright program, the American Philosophical Society, and the California Council for the Humanities, as well as several fellowships from a variety of prominent institutions, including the Historical Society of Southern California, the Haynes Foundation and the Del Amo Foundation. Earning first place in historic preservation from the City of San Diego Historic Sites Board in 2006 and first place in local history at the San Diego County Book Awards in 2006, she was likewise the recipient of the Ben Dixon Award from the Conference of California Historical Societies in 2006, the Living Legacy Award from the Women's International Center in 2004, the California Preservation Foundation Design Award for Rancho Los Cerritos in 2000 and the Davies Award for Faculty Achievement from the University of San Diego in 1984, to name only a few.
