Ms. Hawn is renowned as a retired educator with more than 40 years of excellence to her credit. She initially pursued an education at the University of South Alabama on the GI Bill, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in 1967 and a Master of Arts in 1972, majoring in education as a way to ensure that she would graduate before her funding ran out. Ms. Hawn subsequently earned an Educational Specialist degree at Barry University in 1995.

From 1967 to 1969, Ms. Hawn began her career as a teacher at Murphy High School in Mobile, AL. She later excelled as a teacher and a department chairperson at Hillsdale Middle School in Mobile, AL, between 1969 and 1987. Relocating to Florida, Ms. Hawn worked for Deerfield Beach Middle School as a teacher from 1987 to 1988.

Ms. Hawn further flourished as a teacher, a team leader and a competitions coordinator for the high-tech magnet program at Parkway Middle School in Fort Lauderdale from 1988 to 1996. From 1996 to 2010, she served as a gifted coordinator and teacher at the Pompano Beach Broadcast and Communications Magnet School. Formerly, Ms. Hawn was active as a volunteer teacher at Dauphin Way Methodist Church in Mobile.

Currently, Ms. Hawn is a gifted youth programs coordinator and a member of the communications team for the Broward County Mensa chapter, who recognized her as their 2019 Gifted Youth Coordinator of the Year. She is additionally affiliated with the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development and the American Association of University Women. In her retirement, Ms. Hawn enjoys bridge, computers and technology, and reading cozy mysteries.
