Driven to serve others, Ms. Rhorer pursued an education at Ball State University, from which she earned a bachelor's degree in psychology with a minor in sociology in 1973 and a master's degree in clinical psychology in 1975. She subsequently began her career as a civilian rehabilitation counselor for the U.S. Army in Germany, with which she remained for three-and-a-half years before becoming a substance abuse counselor for the Center for Mental Health in Indiana. Over the course of five years, Ms. Rhorer provided group and family therapy services and worked on the mental health hotline to provide services to any member of the community in which she lived.
Throughout her career, Ms. Rhorer has been dedicated to supporting and advocating for children, adolescents, adults and elderly that were affected by substance abuse, either directly or indirectly. Between the mid-1980s and 2009, she gained valuable expertise in the field as a counselor with Anderson Center of St. Johns, a drug and alcohol counselor with Southwest Florida Addiction Services, a juvenile probation officer for the Juvenile Justice Department and Director of Social Services for Marriott Calusa Harbour, Tandem and Shady Rest Care Center. In recent years, Ms. Rhorer worked as a social services director and grievance coordinator for the Consulate Corporation, from which she retired in 2013.
Dedicated to remaining aware of changes in the field, Ms. Rhorer became a state certified alcoholism counselor and state certified in Alzheimer's diseases and related disorders through the State of Indiana. Outside of her primary work in the field, she further devotes herself to the Community Board for Substance Abuse and has provided private practice individual therapy. Additionally, Ms. Rhorer indulges in a love of acting with local charities and fundraisers.
Even though her career has been filled with highlights, Ms. Rhorer is incredibly proud of being selected as a clinician that traveled to Tallahassee to lobby legislators for nursing homes and the elderly during her tenure at the Shady Rest Care Center. She also recalls her selection by her supervisor to be a guest instructor for Group Therapy Instruction for Military and Civilian Counselors for the U.S. Army in Munich. Looking toward the future, Ms. Rhorer intends to enjoy her well-deserved retirement.
Ms. Rhorer attributes her success to her upbringing and her passion for what she does. She was raised to be conscientious. She likes being able to show people that she can do a good job. Throughout her career, she has done many things to support, advocate for and help children, adolescents, adults and the elderly.
