James D. Cotelingam, MD, Recognized by Marquis Who's Who for Excellence in Medicine



    SHREVEPORT, LA, August 10, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- James D. Cotelingam, MD has meritoriously serve as a diagnostician, teacher, and researcher in Pathology for 54 years.

James D. Cotelingam, MD has been included in Marquis WHO's WHO. A native of Central India, Dr. Cotelingam obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery as well as a Doctor of Medicine in Pathology from the Panjab University, and served as a Staff Pathologist at the Christian Medical College Hospital at Ludhiana in North India.

Following his immigration to the United States in 1973, he completed additional training in Pathology at the Ohio Valley Medical Center in Wheeling, West Virginia, the University pf Pittsburgh Medical Center at The Presbyterian Hospital, and in HematoPathology at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

In 1979, he joined the United States Navy as a Lieutenant. During his Naval career, he served as Chief of Laboratory Service at the Naval Regional Medical Center in Orlando, Florida, as Head of Anatomic Pathology at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, later to become the New Walter Reed Military Medical Center.

In 1985, he was assigned duty as the Lead Pathologist of the team that diagnosed President Ronald Reagan's colon cancer. As that time, Dr. Cotelingam served as a consultant in HematoPathology for the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology and National Cancer Institute in Washington, D.C. his diagnostic responsibilities included services to members of the Supreme Court, Congress, and Foreign Dignitaries. Subsequently, Dr. Cotelingam was assigned as Director of the Tri-Service Fellowship Program in HematoPathology for the Department of Defense.

In 1989, Dr. Cotelingam was promoted to rank of full Professor at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda. He retired from active duty with the rank of Captain (USN).

In 1997, Dr. Cotelingam moved to the Louisiana State University of the Health and Sciences Center in Shreveport, Louisiana where he was appointed as Director of the Clinical Pathology Laboratories. Subsequently he was named W.R. Mathews Professor of Pathology and now serves also as the Medical Director of the Next Generation Sequencing Laboratory for the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center and for COVID 19 testing at the Emerging Viral Threat Laboratory at the University Hospital.

During these years, Dr. Cotelingam has held numerous subspecialty workshops on HematoPathology in the continental US, India, Ireland, Canada and Germany.

Over his remarkable career, Dr. Cotelingam has published numerous scientific papers in the peer reviewed medical literature, a Monograph on Leukemia, and has been celebrated as a mentor to generations of medical students, residents, and fellows in various institutions.

For his loyal military services, Dr. Cotelingam has been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (W/ Bronze Star), National Defense Service Medal, the Outstanding Service Medal from USUHS, a Silver Medal of Excellence by the North American Alumni of the Christian Medical College and the Louisiana Veterans Honor Medal by the Governor. Recently, he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Society. He holds or has held membership in numerous professional organizations.

Dr. Cotelingam has shown remarkable passion for his calling. In the coming years, he plans to volunteer for International Charities such as Doctors Without Borders and Mercy Ships.
