Norman L. Goodman, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Goodman has been endorsed by Marquis Who's Who as a leader in the fields of microbiology and higher education

LEXINGTON, KY, August 12, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Norman L. Goodman, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Goodman celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Goodman is a retired microbiologist and emeritus professor who taught in the School of Medicine at the University of Kentucky in Lexington for many decades. Hired in 1971, he garnered a reputation for his love of science, teaching as an associate professor before being promoted to full professor in the department of pathology. He also had the opportunity to serve as director of mycology on campus during his tenure. Leveraging his expertise in academia, Dr. Goodman was recruited from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, where he was an assistant professor and director of the bacteriology laboratory for three years. He also consulted on behalf of the Bureau of Laboratory Services, South Carolina Board of Health, in Columbia from 1969 to 1971 and worked in the field as a microbiologist for the U.S. Public Health Service in Norman, Oklahoma, from 1962 to 1968, just prior to transitioning into academia.

The highlight of Dr. Goodman's illustrious career was transitioning into a teaching role. He enjoyed participating in various workshops and summer courses and the additional continuing education opportunities that presented themselves. As a teacher, he was equally fortunate to work with many medical students, professional microbiologists and pathologists, which elevated his affinity for the field even more.

After he retired, Dr. Goodman became more active in his church and other community activities. Music has also been very important to him and his family. He and his late wife, who had a wonderful singing voice, were both members of the Lexington Philharmonic together for an incredible 48 years.

Dr. Goodman studied at Southeastern State University in his home state of Oklahoma, where he received a Bachelor of Science in 1954. He then enlisted in the military, where he served two years in the U.S. Army until 1956. It was during his time working in the clinical laboratory overseas at the Army Hospital in Germany that Dr. Goodman notably developed an interest in bacteriology and microbiology. Upon his return, he achieved both a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Oklahoma in 1960 and 1965, respectively. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Medical Microbiology and the American Board of Bioanalysis.

Fortunate to be aligned with several prominent professional organizations throughout his career, Dr. Goodman is an elected fellow and former board governor of the American Academy of Microbiology. He is also a member, past president and former member of the board of directors of the South Central Association for Clinical Microbiology; is a member and past president of the Mycology Society of America; and a member of several other industry-related national and international organizations.

A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Goodman has been cited in the 54th through 59th editions of Who's Who in America, the seventh edition of Who's Who in American Education, and the 26th edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
