Rubinstein, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Rubinstein is a talented engineer who worked for several engineering companies in Los Angeles after graduating college, before transitioning into academia. A designer for Murray Erick Associates from 1954 to 1956, which was an engineering and architectural firm, he then became a structural designer for Victor Gruen Associates for another five years. In 1964, Dr. Rubinstein was recruited by his alma mater, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), as an assistant professor in the department of engineering. Five years later, he received his first promotion as program director of Modern Engineering for the department's executive program. He also created and chaired the Engineering Systems department from 1970 to 1975 and rose to the post of full professor in 1969 before being named professor emeritus in 1994 after 30 years on campus.
Besides teaching, Dr. Rubinstein continued to make an impact in his field as a consultant in both the private and public sectors. He notably consulted on behalf of the Pacific Power and Light Co., the Northrop Grumman Corporation, Texas Instruments Company, the Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corporation, Raytheon, TRW, IBM, and, among other organizations, the U.S. Army and the U.S. Army's science advisory committee, and NASA.
As a researcher, Dr. Rubinstein has extensively studied the use of computers in structural systems, as well as analysis and synthesis. He has also created a campus-wide program in creative problem solving, decision theory, creativity and innovation.
Widely published, Dr. Rubinstein has authored a number of books, dating to 1964 with the release of "Dynamics of Structures," with Professor W. C. Hurty, and Patterns of Problem Solving in 1975. Some of his more recent publications include "Extraordinary Outcomes: Shaping an Otherwise Uncertain Future" in 2014 with Iris Firstenberg, the second edition of "Patterns of Problem Solving" in 1995 with Iris Firstenberg, and "The Minding Organization" in 1999 with Dr. Firstenberg as well. The latter title has since been translated into Portuguese and Japanese in 2000 and into Spanish, Chinese and Russian in 2001. Dr. Rubinstein released numerous press videotapes.
Dr. Rubinstein is an alumnus of UCLA. He obtained a Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in engineering and applied science on campus in 1954, 1957 and 1961, respectively.
Dr. Rubinstein has been aligned as a member of several prominent professional organizations in support of his career goals. Among them, he is active with the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Society of Engineering Education and the Seismological Society of America. He is also a member of Sigma Xi and Tau Beta Phi.
Highlighting his achievements, Dr. Rubinstein's most noteworthy award was the coveted Teaching Award from UCLA during his years as an assistant professor. He received several other recognitions from UCLA during his tenure as well, including being named One of UCLA's Top 20 Professors of the Century in the year 2000. He was honored as an Outstanding Faculty Member on multiple occasions by the State of California Command College between 1987 and 2009, was named Sussman Professor for Distinguished Visitor by the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology for the 1967-1968 academic school year, and, among other honors, received the Western Electric Fund Award from the American Society of Engineering Education in 1965, early in his career. Additionally, Dr. Rubinstein secured a Fulbright-Hays fellowship for study in Yugoslavia and England between 1975 and 1976. Dr. Rubinstein also lectured to the faculty in the University of Iceland at the request of the U.S. State Department.
