KEY WEST, FL, August 19, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Carolee Matsumoto, EdD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Matsumoto celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Carolee Matsumoto believes strongly that education is the lever that can develop everyone's human potential so that they can enjoy a fulfilling life. Her Japanese-American parents instilled this belief in her by encouraging reading and curiosity and by providing her with every learning opportunity available, determined that she and her siblings should not suffer the consequences of racism that they had endured, especially in the years around World War II.

This belief and a deep conviction that everyone deserves both equal access and support to achieve an excellent education, have framed Dr. Matsumoto's efforts to design, develop, lead, and implement innovative teaching and learning strategies over her entire professional career.

Dr. Matsumoto was born in Colorado where her American-born parents had moved to avoid being relocated to the concentration camps where Americans of Japanese descent were imprisoned during World War II. After the war ended, the Matsumoto family moved to Michigan. Dr. Matsumoto earned a Bachelor of Arts (biology) from Eastern Michigan University in 1965, followed by a Master of Education (science education) degree from Wayne State University (Detroit) in 1968. Throughout her career, she continued her post-graduate studies at several universities (Boston University, Miami University, Colorado University, Indiana University), including an appointment as a Visiting Scholar at Stanford University in 1982-83. In 1991 she received her Doctor of Education degree from Harvard University, focusing on how best to implement change in education.

Dr. Matsumoto has been especially interested in incorporating creativity, thinking skills science, technology, and the arts in learning. She developed curriculums, programs, and opportunities to integrate learning across all disciplines, especially science and the arts, in formal (e.g., K-12 and universities) and informal learning environments (e.g., The Smithsonian, WGBH Children's Television).

Dr. Matsumoto devoted a significant portion of her career to science education. Her broad and varied teaching experience includes general science, biology, chemistry, and physics at the elementary, middle, and high school levels in the USA, Brazil, and Japan. She taught science at Woodlands High School, Greenburgh School District #8 in Hartsdale, New York, 1965-1967, and Nagoya International School in Japan, 1968-1970, before teaching at Brookline High School in Massachusetts, 1970-1973. During 1973-1976, she taught and ultimately led the science department at Escola Graduada de Sao Paulo (Graded - The American School of Sao Paulo, Brazil) where she established a marine science research residence program for high school students with scientists from the University of Sao Paulo at their field laboratory on Ihla Bela. Returning to Brookline in 1976, she taught middle school science, and became the district K-8 Supervisor of Science, 1979-1981.

From 1981-1987, Dr. Matsumoto was the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction for the Concord and Concord-Carlisle Public Schools, Massachusetts, where she gained a reputation as a leader in the development of computer technologies for learning and in management, and in the development of creative and critical thinking skills.

During 1987-2007, Dr. Matsumoto worked at Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC) in Newton, Massachusetts, a private, non-profit education research and development firm, where she was Senior Scientist, Principal Investigator, and Senior Project Director for several National and International education projects funded by the National Science Foundation, the Federal Department of Education, and private foundations.

Dr. Matsumoto describes her work as being a "bridge" to connect her personal experiences, perspectives, and a deep understanding of students, teachers, and leaders in schools to her academic, theoretical, and research knowledge base in education. In that capacity she consulted with, trained, developed curriculums for, and provided technical assistance to a great number of schools, districts, states, NGOs, and professional and community organizations.

At EDC, she was one of the early team members involved in developing the National Science Foundation-funded, Insights K-6 and Middle Level science curriculums, was the Director of the New England Regional Center for Principals as Leaders in Science Project (PALS) and coordinator for principal training for the National Science Teachers Association. She as CoProject Director for National Science Foundation-funded Technical Assistance to twenty-five Statewide Systemic Initiatives (SSIs) working to transform science, technology, engineering and mathematics education (STEM) across those states. She also served as the USA Representative of Carpe Vitam, a Swedish Foundation, and the Co-Director of a Best Practices and Innovation Center for K-12 schools in the South Coast Massachusetts region, a community support initiative created by the Chancellor at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (UMASS Dartmouth).

To fulfill her personal mission to promote and advance education, science, environmental awareness, women's rights, and equity, Dr. Matsumoto has served on many Boards and Advisory Committees for professional and non-profit organizations and institutions across the United States and as well as in her New Bedford, Massachusetts community.

In 2002, Dr. Matsumoto joined a founders group consisting of community parents and organizations, EDC, the New Bedford Public Schools, and UMASS Dartmouth to open a Horace Mann Charter School. The New Bedford Global Learning Public Charter School (GLCPS) was designed to provide innovative learning experiences for the diverse and under-served student population in New Bedford. The GLCPS partnered with UMASS Dartmouth and the San Diego based High Tech High Consortium, funded by the Gates Foundation, to implement, demonstrate and disseminate innovative teaching and learning to area educators, parents, and informal education organizations.

Dr. Matsumoto's reputation as a mentor and as a "connector" with a vast network is invaluable as she continues to bring people together from various fields to work together on projects that have great promise "to make a difference!" She is very enthusiastic about the promise of early childhood education as developed by The Basics Initiative based at the Harvard Kennedy School and disseminated by NorthStar Learning Center and the South Coast Coalition in Massachusetts. This initiative builds parents' and the community's capacity to ensure children fully develop their 80% brain growth potential up to age four, as well as their learning readiness. She is also intrigued by new and exciting ways for future mariners to learn on land, sea and virtually as developed by the Northeast Maritime Institute (NMI). As a board member there, she supports the dissemination of the NMI's learning models to other colleges and universities in the belief that they can help make higher education more global, hands-on, and relevant to the real world and can utilize and expand innovative models of virtual learning.

Dr. Carolee Matsumoto continues her search for education opportunities in education that can catalyze life-long learning and better lives for everyone!
