While studying in Belgium, Dr. May was introduced to the field of modern history, population studies and demography. He went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts in modern history and a Master of Arts in demography from the Catholic University of Louvain in 1973 and in 1985, respectively. Following this accomplishment, Dr. May studied at Paris Descartes University, where he attained a Doctor of Philosophy in demography.
After concluding his studies, Dr. May became a population specialist and long-term consultant in the African region for the World Bank. He also worked as a co-coordinator of the World Bank Population and Reproductive Health Thematic Group, as a visiting fellow at the Center for Global Development (CGD), and as a visiting scholar at the Population Reference Bureau (PRB). During the later stages of his career, Dr. May became an adjunct professor at Georgetown University and a senior fellow at the Population Institute. Presently, he is a research professor at the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University and an honorary professor at the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium.
As a respected voice in his field, Dr. May has been asked to attend numerous industry conferences and universities as a keynote speaker, lecturer and presenter. He has also authored and co-authored countless books, book chapters, web articles, blogs, podcasts, op-eds and interviews in the field. Most recently, he co-authored "Demography and Economic Emergence of Sub-Saharan Africa" with Jean-Pierre Guengant, which was published in English and French and will be translated into Italian. In 2017, Dr. May went on to publish "Africa's Population: In Search of a Demographic Dividend."
For his efforts over the years, Dr. May has been presented with the numerous World Bank Spot awards. He also received the Chief Economist's Best Practice Award from World Bank Africa Region, the Good Practice ICR Quality Award for the Gambia HIV/AIDS Rapid Response Project Implementation Completion Report (ICR), and the Global Media Award for Best Book in Population for "World Population Policies: Their Origin, Evolution, and Impact."
In order to remain aware of developments in the field, Dr. May maintains his affiliation with the Population Association of Pakistan (PAP), the Union for African Population Studies, the Population Reference Bureau, the Population Association of America, the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population and the Berlin Institute for Population and Development, among others. Looking toward the future, he is currently writing a handbook on population policy.
