Dr. Patel is a board-certified internal medicine, pulmonary and critical care provider who has served as the Director of Critical Care at the Tift Regional Health System, Southwell, Inc. since 2014. Born in Oldham, England, she spent her childhood and youth in Nairobi, Kenya, and was encouraged to pursue her dream of becoming a physician by a broad range childhood and adult experiences. After immigrating to the United States in 1991 and later serving as a medic in the US Army, Dr. Patel studied medicine at the Saba University School of Medicine in the Netherlands-Antilles, where she earned a Doctor of Medicine in 2004. She completed a residency in internal medicine at New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital between 2004 and 2007, and pursued a fellowship in pulmonary disease and critical care medicine at New York Methodist Hospital from 2007 until 2010.
Upon completing her training in New York in 2010, she took on a position as a pulmonary and critical care physician in a rural town in Georgia at Tift Regional Health system. She was interested in an opportunity to learn the needs of an underserved area of the country and desired to offer her earned knowledge in the field of pulmonary and critical care medicine where it was most needed. Dr. Patel is grateful to have contributed to the development of the successful growth of the intensive care unit, the development of a respiratory and pulmonary rehabilitation program, and improved access to the specialty of pulmonary medicine for a community serving an expansive geographic area of South Georgia. She was named as the Director of Critical Care at the Tift Regional Health System in 2014, and has served in various additional leadership roles within the Tift Regional Health System, including terms as the Chairperson of Medicine and the Chief of the Medical Executive Committee. She has also been an influential leader and frontline physician during the Covid 19 pandemic, working endless hours to care for critically ill patients and promoting education and awareness to the medical staff and community. Dr. Patel serves on the Diversity and Inclusion Council at Tift Regional Health System which promotes the growth of expanding diversity and inclusion initiatives. Dr. Patel was bestowed with an Exceptional Physician Award by the Tifton Healthcare System in 2017.
Dr. Patel has contributed to several medical textbook chapters, and is credited as the lead author of several case studies and journal articles, including "The Prevalence of Tracheobronchomalacia in Patients with Asthma or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease," "A Rare Cause of Multiple Cavitary Nodules" and "Clavicular Tuberculosis Following Trivial Trauma." To remain aware of developments in the field, she is a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians and a member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the American Thoracic Society and the American College of Physicians.
