Ms. Fortune took individual classes at Rhode Island College and Providence College, and attained her BA (1973) and Masters degrees at UMass Dartmouth (2012). She prospered as a middle and high school teacher for the New England Christian Academy in Swansea for 28 years.
Ms. Fortune has volunteered with the Johnston Christian Academy and the New Testament Christian School in Norton, Massachusetts, the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary and the American Veterans organization. She is a member of the Association of Christian Schools International and received a Teacher of the Year award in 1987.
Ms. Fortune attributes her success to her psychology professor at UMass Dartmouth, with whom she has kept in touch during her subsequent career. She considers her most remarkable career achievement to be mentoring her students to write poetry; over the years, four of her students have had their works featured in The American Poetry Anthology, a volume published by the prestigious Library of America.
