An internationally renowned business professional who has devoted her career to marketing, management and consumer behavior, Dr. Doran is now focusing her attention on academia. In 2018, she was named as the dean of the college of business at the University of Wisconsin in Eau Claire. Having developed an early passion for business, she spent more than a decade in the corporate realm working for such organizations as International Paper Company and Harbidge House, where she focused on sales, finance and strategic planning. She was also the owner and a licensed commercial pilot of Eagle Valley Aviation and Condor Aviation. Furthermore, she has spent years in consulting in the areas of aviation, finance, hospitality and other areas of business, including as the principal of Narod Enterprises Consulting in Vail between 1982 and 1986.
Leading a parallel career in academia for many years, Dr. Doran's current role comes on the heels of numerous previous faculty appointments. She first lectured at California Polytechnic State University and McGill University, and later as an assistant professor at Babson College. Throughout the course of her professional journey, she transitioned into administration teaching and serving as the dean at several institutions, including the school of business and information science at Lasell University and the Bertolon School of Business at Salem State University. She was also the Robert J. Johnson Endowed Chair and Dean of the Offutt School of Business at Concordia College before joining UW-Eau Claire. Thoroughly enjoying the campus experience, Dr. Doran bears a particular affinity for public higher education because students truly appreciate and understand the transformative nature of the field.
As a part of her research, Dr. Doran has extensively studied Chinese consumer behavior, as well as eldercare management, and other prominent areas of the business. In 2003, she had the opportunity to spend time in Uganda as a Fulbright senior specialist. Dr. Doran also spent time overseas as an instructor at Tsinghua University in Beijing between 2001 and 2002.
Well regarded in the local community for her efforts, Dr. Doran has excelled as the president of the nonprofit organization, The House of the Seven Gables, since 2009, where she previously served as a trustee from 2007 to 2015. She recently concluded her service as the treasurer of the Fargo Air Museum in February 2021. Other commitments to her credit include serving on the board of Junior Achievement since 2019 and the Massachusetts Association of Older Americas between 2006 and 2015. Additionally, Dr. Doran served as a commissioner of the Essex National Heritage Area from 2005 until 2015.
Dr. Doran received a Bachelor of Arts at Dartmouth College in 1976 and a Master of Business Administration at the University of Virginia in 1978. Years later, she returned to university and earned a Doctor of Philosophy at McGill University in 2000. An active member of several industry-related organizations, Dr. Doran is a member of the Association for Consumer Research and the Academy of International Business. In light of her accomplishments, she was named the Outstanding Scholar in Chinese Marketing by the Society for Marketing Advances.
