TODD, NC, September 10, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Glenn Ellen Starr Stilling has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Ms. Stilling has accrued 40 years of professional experience as a librarian. Having been a habitual reader and library user since childhood, she was excited when she secured her first job as a student assistant in the library at the University of South Carolina (Columbia, SC). Ms. Stilling went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in English, a Master of Arts in English, and a Masters in Library Science from this institution.
Upon completing her formal education, Ms. Stilling was hired in 1978 by the Columbus County Public Library (Whiteville, NC) to work as a reference librarian and as the assistant director of the library. She gained experience in her field through two years in this role. Then, in 1980, she accepted a position at the library of Pembroke State University (Pembroke, NC). There, she served for four and a half years as a reference and library instruction librarian. In 1985, Ms. Stilling began work at the library at Appalachian State University (Boone, NC). Her responsibilities at Appalachian over the years included reference service, library instruction, information literacy instruction, and service as a liaison from the library to various academic departments. This period in her professional life lasted from 1985 until her retirement from Appalachian in 2018.
In addition to her work in academic libraries, Ms. Stilling served (and continues her service) on the board of directors and as board secretary for OASIS, Inc. (Boone, NC). OASIS is a nonprofit agency that provides services for survivors of intimate partner violence and sexual violence. Moreover, Ms. Stilling is the author or coauthor of several scholarly and professional journal articles; a published book-length bibliography (which won an award from the North Carolina Society of Historians); a textbook chapter; book reviews; and numerous articles in specialized encyclopedias. Ms. Stilling is a member of the American Library Association, the Association of College and Research Libraries, and the Text and Academic Authors Association.
Ms. Stilling credits her accomplishments to perseverance, attention to detail, and positivity. She is grateful for support and encouragement from her husband, Roger Stilling, and from family members, friends, colleagues, mentors, teachers, and professional helpers. Though her career has several highlights, she is most proud of having achieved the status of Professor Emerita at Appalachian State University, a recognition that required a sustained record of contributions in scholarship, librarianship, and service. In the future, Ms. Stilling will be involved in writing, community service, and studying retirement financial planning and investment—activities that will allow her to contribute to the greater good.
