Don R. Topliff, PhD, has been Inducted into the Prestigious Marquis Who's Who Biographical Registry

Trained as an animal nutritionist, Dr. Topliff has dedicated his career to teaching students about the animal industry



    SAN ANGELO, TX, September 13, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Don R. Topliff, PhD, has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Growing up as a rodeo cowboy, Dr. Topliff has always enjoyed providing care for animals and assisting them in reaching their full potential. He initially obtained an Associate of Applied Science in agriculture from Colby Community College in 1973 and a Bachelor of Science in agriculture from Kansas State University in 1978. Soon thereafter, he earned a Master of Science in animal science from Texas A&M University in 1981. He completed his education in 1984, at which time he graduated from Texas A&M University with a PhD in animal nutrition. Throughout his academic career, Dr. Topliff research was culminated in his thesis, "Thiamin Supplementation for Exercising Horses" and his dissertation, "Diet Manipulation, Muscle Glycogen Metabolism and Anaerobic Work Performance in the Equine."

Dr. Topliff began his career at Oklahoma State University in 1983 as an assistant professor. Drawing upon his vast expertise, he was promoted at the aforementioned university as an associate professor of animal science in 1987 and a professor of animal science in 1993. Upon departing from Oklahoma State University in 1998, Dr. Topliff continued his career at West Texas A&M University as a professor, the head of the department of agricultural sciences and the director of agricultural research for nearly a decade.

Dr. Topliff subsequently served at West Texas A&M University as the associate dean of the College of Agriculture, Science and Engineering from 2007 to 2010, the interim head of the department of mathematics, chemistry and physics from 2008 to 2010 and a professor, the chief academic officer and the dean of the College of Agriculture, Science and Engineering from 2010 to 2014. Dedicated to his role within higher education, he has found success as the provost and vice president of academic affairs at Angelo State University since 2015. A popular author in the field of equine nutrition, Dr. Topliff is proud to have co-authored the book "Nutrient Requirements of Horses" as well as publications such as "Use of Horses," "Environmental Aspects of Feeding Horses," "Horses and the Horse Industry" and "Feeding the horse ridden for pleasure," among others.

Over the course of his career, Dr. Topliff has maintained his professional affiliations with the Professional Agricultural Workers of Texas, the American Society of Animal Science and the American Quarter Horse Association. He has also served as the president of the Texas Council of Chief Academic Officers, the National Horse Judging Team Coaches Association, the Equine Science Society, the Agricultural Consortium of Texas and Non-Land-Grant Agriculture and Renewable Resources Universities. Furthermore, he was recruited for two terms on the Committee on Animal Nutrition of the National Research Council. Dedicated to his local community, Dr. Topliff has contributed on the board of directors of the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce and has been heavily involved with the research efforts of the Texas Cattle Feeders Association.

For his contributions in the field, Dr. Topliff is honored to have been presented with the Texas 4-H Alumni Award, the University Excellence Award from the West Texas A&M University Alumni Association and the Lifetime Distinguished Award from the Equine Science Society. Furthermore, he holds an Honorary Lone Star Farmer Degree granted by the Texas FFA Association and has garnered three separate nominations for inclusion in Who's Who Among Teachers in America. Looking toward the future, Dr. Topliff aims to enjoy his retirement after a rewarding career of influencing countless generations of students.
