Mr. Madson obtained a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from Iowa State University in 1969 and a Master of Science in chemical engineering from the aforementioned university the following year. Upon receipt of the graduate degree, he was recruited as a process engineer by Procter & Gamble, where he thrived in a variety of leadership positions throughout the 1970's. Mr. Madson was the youngest employee in the history of the company to be promoted to the position of Associate Director, Product Development.
In 1980, Mr. Madson was appointed consulting engineer at Raphael Katzen Associates, which is known for being the creator of the technology for producing the world's cleanest pharmaceutical and beverage-grade ethanol. Five years later, he advanced to the position of vice president, which involved overseeing technology, as well as the company's marketing efforts. After flourishing in this role for eight years, Mr. Madson was promoted to President of Raphael Katzen Associates International, Inc. Thanks to his success in shifting the company's focus towards value-added agricultural processing, he was selected as the company's second-ever President in 1993. After expanding the company's business scope, Mr. Madson opened the European market in which the company became the market leader. Mr. Madson continued the growth of the company in its traditional markets and by 1999 the company's focus turned to the international markets. Under its new name, KATZEN International, Inc. is recognized as a market leader conducting business in 40 countries under Mr. Madson's leadership.
Throughout his 50-year career, Mr. Madson has been honored with a myriad of accolades, such as the Lifetime Achievement Award from F.O. Licht's World Ethanol and Biofuels and the Excellence Award from the International Fuel Ethanol Workshop (FEW). Mr. Madson is extremely proud of his Distinguished Contribution Award for Commercialization of Biofuels and Chemicals presented by the Society for Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology (SIMB) in 2016. He has authored several chapters in the second through the sixth editions of "The Alcohol Textbook" (Ethanol Technology Institute), which is the authoritative textbook for the ethanol industry. Mr. Madson additionally remains active as a senior member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). He frequently lectures to industry leaders worldwide.
