Prior to earning renown in California, Ms. Wood spent several years as a freelance textile designer and graphic designer in London and New York City. During this period, she created a book cover for Tennessee Williams' Night of the Iguana. She also drew several illustrations for full-page advertisements for a documentary series that were commissioned by CBS and published in The New York Times. Ms. Wood subsequently accepted a position as a wallpaper designer for Rasch Tapeten Fabric in Osnabruck, Germany, in 1965. She remained active with the organization for almost 20 years, until 1984, whereupon she moved back to the U.S. and established herself in Los Angeles.
In addition to creating her unique works of art, Ms. Wood lectured at Farnham School of Art and the Central School of Art, London during the 1970s. She also taught at Claremont College in California from 1992 to 1993 and again in 1995. Born in England, Ms. Wood attended Southport School of Art from 1955 to 1957, and graduated from Manchester College with a diploma with first class honors in 1957. She later graduated from the Royal College of Art in London, with first class honors, and subsequently received a Fulbright scholarship to study at Parsons School of Design in New York City, where she earned a postgraduate degree in 1963.
Earning renown for her innate ability to transform a piece of canvas into a lifelike image of an automobile, Ms. Wood participated in numerous group shows in California, Texas, Ohio, Nevada and other locations throughout the U.S. In 2001, she had her exhibition at the Biarritz Art Gallery in Portland, Oregon, and the Goldstrum Gallery in New York. That same year, Ms. Wood was honored when the Peterson Automotive Museum in Los Angeles hosted a retrospective of her work. She has since also had her artwork shown at the Sherry Frumkin Gallery in Santa Monica, California, the Bruce Lewin Gallery in New York City, and the O.K. Harris/David Klein Art Gallery in Detroit, as well as in several art books, such as "Paintings of California" by Arnold Skolnick and "A Celebration of Automotive Art" by Gerry Durnell. One of her textile designs named, "Vibration" by Heal's of London sold eight and a half miles on its first printing. Additionally, Ms. Wood's work has been included as cover art and featured in pictorial spreads by such well-known car magazines as Road and Track, Automobile Magazine and Car Collector Magazine.
Ms. Wood's portfolio includes oil paintings on canvas that ranged in size from 15x20 to 36x48 inches. She has donated several of her pieces, which have been auctioned for charity through the Pebble Beach Concourse d'Elegance. Her work has also been commissioned by the Concourse for its poster and program cover in 1993, 1997, and again in 2002. Additionally, Ms. Wood had the good fortune to display at least three of her paintings at the Concourse annually for over 30 years.
A member of the Automotive Fine Art Society, Ms. Wood was honored by the organization as a five-time recipient of the Athena Award of Excellence. She has also received several other accolades throughout her illustrious career, including the Peter Helck Award for her 1993 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance poster painting of a 1931 V16 Cadillac and her 2009 painting of a Ferrari 512. Ms. Wood was also recognized with a Spirit of Leadership Award from the Women's Automotive Association International in 2015. A celebrated Marquis listee, she has been cited in various editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who of American Women.
