Albert L. Humphries Honored for Excellence in Writing Arts

Notably, Mr. Humphries was named one of the "Best New Poets" by the American Poetry Association in 1986

COLUMBUS, GA, September 27, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Albert L. Humphries has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Over the course of five decades, Albert L. Humphries has carved out two vastly different but equally successful careers; upon retiring from the telecommunications field, the Georgia native—who had long been guided by a passion for music and the beauty of words—began an accomplished career as a songwriter, lyricist, and published poet. Hoping to be remembered by the inspiring and positive messages in his poetry, Mr. Humphries' remarkable journey has been a testament to never letting go of one's dreams.

Growing up in the city of Oglethorpe in Macon County in the 1950s, Mr. Humphries was raised by farmers, neither of whom had a proper education, and learned from an early age the value of hard work and integrity. His biggest motivator in life at this time was to get a good job and provide for his family—after high school, he moved to New York and studied for two years at Queens College, but didn't earn a degree. While there, he was greatly inspired by his mentor Nikki Giovanni, a professor who believed in him and a renowned poet, whose work has granted her numerous honors, including a Langston Hughes Medal and Grammy Award; while a student of hers, she opened his eyes to powerful written works tried to convince him to stay in school. Despite feeling less educated than others, he subsequently secured a position as a unit manager at Irving Trust, now operating as Bank of New York. An early pioneer when it came to working on computers, he excelled as a telecommunications manager at the company from 1972 to 1982, at which point he retired.

Mr. Humphries was inspired to shift gears professionally by Ms. Giovanni and proceeded to focus on writing—both poems and songs. His burst of creative productivity led to the publication of "Humphries' Anthologies" in 1983, a collection of his first 100 copyrighted love poems and songs. In addition, the following year, he composed such songs as "I'm Hungry for Your Love," "Season's Greetings," and "Love Ache," which is a track of his that has two different versions. He composed a follow-up, "Humphries' Anthologies II" in 1988, and subsequently released "Life Goes On" and "Together We Stand" in 1995, authored the poem "Mr. Michael Jackson" in 2009, and is currently working on the third in his collection, "Humphries' Anthology III."

In recognition of his vast output, Mr. Humphries has been honored with numerous accolades over the years. He received the Merit Award from the Talent Association in Boston in 1983, a Harmonious Award from the New York Professor Armature Song Jubilee in 1985, and was named one of the "Best New Poets" by the American Poetry Association in 1986. He also earned a Cambridge Leadership Award from the American Biographical Institute in 1986, a Certificate of Merit from the International Biographical Center in 1987, and a Personalities of America Commemorative Certificate Award, a "5,000 Personalities of the World" Certificate, a Certificate for Inclusion in Personalities, and a Certificate for Community Leadership from the American Biographical Institute in 1987. Mr. Humphries was given a Men of Achievement Award from Cambridge and a Certificate of Creativity in Artistry from the National Library of Poetry in Washington, D.C., in addition to several Who's Who honors.

Looking toward the future, Mr. Humphries plans to continue writing poetry and eventually consolidating his extensive catalogue to one book. When he isn't working, he enjoys playing the piano and guitar, chess, backgammon, going roller skating, and attending Broadway shows; but above all else, his favorite activity will always be spending time with his daughter, Tisa Alana, for whom he has a profound love.
