After earning a Bachelor of Arts in microbiology and chemistry from the University of Texas at Austin in 1971, Dr. Sauri attended the Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine, from which he attained a Doctor of Medicine in 1975. Following this accomplishment, he attained a Master's degree in Public Health and Tropical Medicine from Tulane University in 1978, after which he pursued a residency in General Preventative Medicine at the School of Aerospace Medicine in the United States Air Force in 1979. Dr. Sauri also completed a residency in Internal Medicine and the Brooke Army Medical Center in 1983 and a Fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Bethesda Navy Hospital for the United States Navy.
Dr. Sauri began his career as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army before becoming the Chief of the General Preventitve Medicine residency program at the School of Aerospace Medicine from 1980 to 1981. Between 1983 and 1984, he subsequently served as a Regional Medical Officer for the American Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand, before finding success as a chief in the Department of Medicine for the U.S. Army from 1985 until 1987. Since 1987, Dr. Sauri has worked as a medical consultant for a travel advisory and immunization clinic and as the medical director for Occupational Health Consultants. He also serves as a clinical professor the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and is a Fellow in the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the Americal College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine and the American College of Physicians.
Well regarded for his various accomplishments in the field, Dr. Sauri has received numerous accolades. Among them, he was named as a top physician in internal medicine, infectious diseases and tropical medicine in the Washington Metropolitan Area, as well as the first physician recipient of the Defense Superior Medal and the Humanitarian Service Medal. In 2009, he was awarded with the Occupational Medicine Physician of the Year award from the Maryland College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. Dr. Sauri has also received numerous awards and decorations from the Department of Defense, the State Department, and state and local governments.
A prolific scholar, Dr. Sauri has authored many articles that have focused on chemical and biological warfare, medical care for refugees and displaced populations, tropical diseases and HIV/AIDS. In accounting for his overall success in the field, he credits his talented team of nurses and administrators, many of whom have worked alongside him for years. Among his career accomplishments, Dr. Sauri is most proud to have dedicated so many years of his life to both the military and medical field.
