Mr. Hargis was innately born with a talent for music and a predisposition for a career in music. After cultivating his passion by playing church hymns by ear on the piano from the age of four and listening to multiple genres of music throughout his teenage years, he worked as a freelance woodwind musician in Houston, Texas. During that time, Mr. Hargis studied commercial and classical music performance at the University of Houston where he was a student of Byron Hester, principal flutist with the Houston Symphony Orchestra for 40 years and Professor Emeritus of the University of Houston's School of Music, having been on the faculty for 39 years.
In the ensuing years, Mr. Hargis studied jazz performance at the University of North Texas. He gained valuable expertise as a band manager, and eventually became leader of the Buddy Brock Orchestra, a ballroom dance band that performed at exclusive hotels, country clubs and other venues across Texas and other states. Likewise, he served as a professor of clarinet and saxophone at the University of St. Thomas in Houston. Other roles to his credit include serving as the Scheduling Manager for JMC Homes, a contract employee for Robert Half Finance & Accounting, and the president and chief executive officer of Fred Hargis Inc. Additionally, Mr. Hargis most recently served as a Fixed Assets Accountant for Nabors Corporate Services.
Outside of his work, Mr. Hargis has dedicated himself over the years to the University of Houston's first chapter of the National Association of Jazz Educators and the Board of Directors of Post Wood Municipal Utility District, and he has also cultivated his passion for genealogical research for both his extended family and friends. In addition to his outstanding body of work, he was named in Who's Who Among Rising Young Americans in American Society and Business 1992, is a member of the Golden Key National College Honor Society, and was the only student in Sam Houston High School's history to receive an Outstanding Musician Award. Mr. Hargis was honored to perform in the 1990 World Premier of the musical Jekyll & Hyde at Alley Theater in Houston, Texas, starring Linda Eder, but more notably, he is most proud to have performed at the 1992 Republican National Convention and at President George H.W. Bush's Inaugural Ball in Washington, D.C. in 1989.
