SANTA MONICA, CA, October 05, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Emma Aguila has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Ms. Aguila initially earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics in 2000 from Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de Mexico in Mexico City. She then obtained a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in economics from University College London in 2005. Ms. Aguila subsequently joined the RAND Corporation, where she worked from 2006 to 2013, serving as a senior economist and director for the Center for Latin American Social Policy. Since 2014, Ms. Aguila has been at the Sol Price School of Public Policy at the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles, where she currently serves as an associate professor in applied econometrics and economics of aging. She is additionally senior fellow at the Schaeffer Center for Health Policy and Economics at the University of Southern California.
Ms. Aguila has undertaken groundbreaking research on how socioeconomic status shapes health disparities. Specifically, she has focused on supplemental income programs and health and wellbeing of poor older adults, incentives of social security systems and their effects on the wellbeing of older adults, and socioeconomic status, health, and wellbeing of older Hispanic immigrants. The novel experimental methods she devised for a Mexican program identified myriad health benefits for recipients, particularly for women who received more frequent payments. Her research on changes in Mexican retirement systems with personal retirement accounts offered more incentives for retirement than the previous pay-as-you-go system. Her research on Hispanic immigrants and retirement found multiple vulnerabilities for these populations, particularly when failing to gain Social Security eligibility. Those without such eligibility in the United States often fall into poverty, while those returning to Mexico had to work at older ages.
Ms. Aguila's research has been published in more than 20 articles of leading scientific journals as well as in two books on income security in retirement, social security, health, and migration from Mexico to the United States. She has consulted with the World Bank, the Department of Work and Pensions in the United Kingdom, the Mexican Ministry of Finance, the Mexican Ministry of Energy, and the Mexican National Population Council. She has received the first prize in pension research from the Mexican Government Retirement Funds Administrators (CONSAR), the Inter-American Award for Research in Social Security, the RAND Gold Merit Award, and the inaugural High Impact Research Award from the USC Sol Price School of Public Policy.
Among Ms. Aguila's students are those who have become key policymakers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, World Bank, and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. Ms. Aguila has been a member of the American Economic Association, the Econometric Society, the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management, the Gerontological Society of America, the Population Association of America and the Latin American and Caribbean Economic Association.
