Now retired, Dr. Riordan has served as an archaeologist who spent a significant amount of his career in the education sector. An emeritus professor of anthropology at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, he concluded his tenure there in 2014 after 39 years on campus. His extensive background included roles as assistant, associate, and full professor, beginning in the fall of 1976 in the department of sociology and anthropology. He chaired the department of sociology and anthropology between 1982 and 1988, and again from 1999 to 2014. Dr. Riordan conducted archaeological fieldwork with his summer WSU Field School in Archaeology class every summer from 1977 through 2014. Prior to joining the University, he briefly worked for the Maryland Historical Trust in Annapolis as an archaeologist with the State Historic Preservation Office.

Upon his retirement, Dr. Riordan was named Research Curator of Archaeology by the Dayton Society of Natural History in 2015. Originally founded as part of the Dayton Public Library and Museum in 1893, the DSNH runs Dayton's Boonshoft Museum of Discovery.

Dr. Riordan has contributed numerous articles to books and professional journals, as well as contracted archaeological reports. He currently has a book, entitled "The Moorehead Circle: A Timber Post Ceremonial Complex at the Fort Ancient Earthwork", which is pending publication. During the 1980s and 1990s he was appointed by Ohio Governors to the Ohio Historic Site Preservation Advisory Board, which nominates historic sites and properties to the National Register of Historic Places.

Dr. Riordan received a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology and anthropology from Colgate University in 1968, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Southern Illinois University in 1975. He has been a Registered Professional Archaeologist since 1999.

An elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Dr. Riordan also maintains professional memberships in the Society for American Archaeology, the Society for Historical Archaeology, the Ohio Archaeological Council, of which he is a past president and trustee, Sigma Xi, and Phi Kappa Phi.

Dr. Riordan received a Liberal Arts Merit Teaching Award from Wright State University in 1981 while he was an assistant professor. In 1999 the University named him as one of its three University Professors, a prestigious position that he occupied from 2000 to 2005. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Riordan has been cited in the 20th, 21st, and 23rd editions of Who's Who in the Midwest and the first edition of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
