Makini Chisolm-Straker, MD MPH, Celebrated for Dedication to the Fields of Medicine and Education

    NEW YORK, NY, October 07, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Makini Chisolm-Straker, MD MPH, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Drawing inspiration from the example of her parents, Dr. Chisolm-Straker earned a Bachelor of Arts in religious studies from Brown University, a Doctorate of Medicine from the Alpert School of Medicine at Brown University, and a Master of Public Health with a certificate in public health and humanitarian aid from the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University. She completed an emergency medicine residency at Mount Sinai Hospital and the Elmhurst Hospital Center, and then a fellowship in global emergency medicine at Columbia University Medical Center. She is also a co-founder and the first treasurer of HEAL Trafficking. Less than two years after starting her global emergency medicine fellowship, she joined the International Rescue Committee as an Ebola case management transition coordinator.

Supported by her considerable experience, Dr. Chisolm-Straker serves as an associate professor of emergency medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and as a consultant with the National Human Trafficking Training and Technical Assistance Center through the Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Trafficking in Persons. Dr. Chisolm-Straker is also the principal investigator for RAFT (Rapid Appraisal for Trafficking) which derived and validated the first brief labor and sex trafficking screening tool for healthcare settings, TRANS ED (TGNB Research Applying Novel Strategies in Education), which examines the capacity of virtual reality to teach emergency medicine residents empathy and knowledge about the care of gender diverse emergency department patients, and ETHIC (Examining the Human Impact of the Charge), which seeks to examine the public health impacts of the expansion of the public charge on immigrant communities.

Due to her outstanding expertise, Dr. Chisolm-Straker has contributed to numerous articles published in professional journals, including AJOB Empirical Bioethics, AEM Education and Training, Annals of Emergency Medicine, and the American Journal of Public Health, among others, and is a decision editor for Academic Emergency Medicine. She has co-edited two public health textbooks on labor and sex trafficking in the United States. Driven to remain aware of progress in the field of emergency medicine, Dr. Chisolm-Straker is a member of the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine's Academy of Diversity and Inclusion in Emergency Medicine. Dr. Chisolm-Straker is also a member of the Mirror Memoirs Leadership Council. In addition to her work, she volunteers at the Animal Haven Shelter and the Libertas Center for Human Rights. For her professional excellence, Dr. Chisolm-Straker has received various accolades including a Career Development Award through the Harold Amos Faculty Development Program at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
