Mr. Markelonis has found much success in retail marketing for nearly 40 years. As the executive vice president of retail operations at Volunteers of America, he coalesced smaller thrift store properties together into larger businesses in stores of over 30,000 square feet. In addition to his main responsibilities in the field, Mr. Markelonis worked for Village Discount Outlet and Ohio Thrift, organizations that solicited for pickups and merchandise to be used in thrift outlet stores.
Mr. Markelonis' exemplary performance in the field emerged as a result of his academic journey. He initially pursued an education at Lakeland Community College, from which he obtained an Associate of Science in accounting and business management. Mr. Markelonis concluded his formal studies with a Bachelor of Science in accounting and business law from Ohio University in 1977. Being raised on the shores of Lake Erie, his father was a boater and taught Mr. Markelonis and his siblings how to water ski. In 1990, Mr. Markelonis purchased his first boat and later a jet ski. He taught his own children how to water ski and operate the jet ski.
A devoted volunteer within his local community, Mr. Markelonis has served as a troop leader for the Boy Scouts of America. Beyond his contributions to his community, he donates monthly to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which builds mortgage-free smart homes for the nation's most catastrophically injured veterans and first responders. He is currently looking for charities to support for dog adoption and ASPCA. Mr. Markelonis hopes to enjoy his well-deserved retirement while still attempting to help others and enjoying his family including his two grandchildren.
