In her position since 2010, she reports directly to the Public Works Director and works closely with the Assistant City Manager and members of the council. Responsible for all aspects of utility, which includes services for more than 7,000 customers, she oversees operations, power supply, finance and administration aspects of the business, and regulation, among other responsibilities. Garnering former success and expertise with the City of Colton, California, Ms. Olko excelled as General Manager from 2004 to 2010, where she oversaw daily operations that provided service to over 18,000 customers. She also held the position of assistant director from 2002 to 2004 and revenue manager from 1998 to 2002.
Establishing herself in the utilities industry, Ms. Olko admitted, was purely by accident. However, as she continued to learn more about the field, she became more intrigued. A complex, challenging environment that offered her growth opportunity, it quickly became a satisfying, rewarding profession. Even after all these years in the field, Ms. Olko is still confronted with various obstacles as the industry continues to grow and evolve. These challenges often present opportunities for her to grow as well. Consequently, Ms. Olko has become more flexible, responsive and innovative in her work. Among these many changes she has seen, the most notable ones have included market operations, greenhouse gas emission reduction, renewable energy and wildfire mitigation.
As a leader in her community, Ms. Olko has been serving as a board member for the California Municipal Utilities since 2019, representing small utilities in southern California. She possesses a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a Master of Business Administration in finance from the University of California Riverside.
Despite being a woman in a male-dominated industry, Ms. Olko has never let it hold her back from doing her best. Inspired by several great mentors over the years, including supervisors and utility leaders in the field, she is proud of how far she has come. Crediting her success in management to her strong communication skills, Ms. Olko also finds it especially helpful when speaking to city council members, upper management and the public.
