Well-regarded in her field, she progressed at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, from serving as an assistant professor, associate professor, to professor and finally as a professor emerita of community studies. After retiring from UIVC she served as a research professor at the University of Texas at Dallas, from 2007-2013. Beyond her primary endeavors, Dr. Salamon contributed to the United States Department of Agriculture as a visiting scientist several times in the Economic Research Service.

Prior to embarking upon her career, Dr. Salamon pursued an education at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, from which she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Design in 1961. She later obtained a Master of Arts from the University of California Berkeley in 1965 in anthropology. Following these achievements, Dr. Salamon concluded her education at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in anthropology, in 1974.

With a plethora of knowledge at her disposal, Dr. Salamon has authored more than 15 book chapters and nearly 30 journal articles. The co-author of "Singlewide: Chasing the American Dream in a Rural Trailer Park," a book published in 2017, she also penned "Newcomers to Old Towns: Suburbanization of the Heartland" in 2003 and "Prairie Patrimony: Family, Farming & Community in the Midwest" in 1992. Dr. Salamon considers one of the highlights of her career to have been her tenure working in Tokyo, Japan, where her field with Japanese women research accomplished was the basis for her Ph.D dissertation and various articles.

In light of her exceptional research, Dr. Salamon was presented with the Robert E. Park Award from the American Sociological Association in 2004 for her book "Newcomers to Old Towns", the Excellence in Research Award from the Rural Sociological Society in 19991 and the Paul A. Funk Recognition Award from the College of Agriculture, Consumer and Environmental Sciences of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1998. Moreover, she held a post-doctoral fellowship from the German Academic Exchange Program of the Council for European Studies (DAAD) in 1975 for field research in Munich, West Germany. Passionate about her field, Dr. Salamon was chosen as a member of National Research Council's Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources in 2002 through 2007 in addition to her election as the president of the Rural Sociological Society from 2001 to 2002, and chosen as a member of the Kellogg National Rural Studies Committee from 1987 to 1996.
