Chhandak Basu, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

    LOS ANGELES, CA, October 27, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Chhandak Basu, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, an honor which is bestowed upon less than 5% of 1.5 million Marquis Who's Who biographees. An accomplished listee, Dr. Basu celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Leading a successful career in both academia and research, Dr. Basu has worked as a professor and research scientist at California State University-Northridge (CSUN) for the past 10 years. Hired as a faculty member in 2011, he teaches various courses in the department of biology, including Recombinant DNA Techniques and Biotechnology. As a researcher in his field, he conducts extensive studies on plant biotechnology and plant molecular physiology. Dr. Basu's goals include producing genetically engineered plant and microbial cells and using them as factories for the production of biofuel and other economically important compounds. In addition to his appointment at CSUN, he works as a research affiliate at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Origins and Habitability Laboratory — a position he has held since 2020. There, he spends his time conducting research in the field of astrobiology, specifically how cells are able to survive in hostile environments.

Dr. Basu was also a visiting associate professor in the Department of Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine during 2019. Dr. Basu has trained a multitude of undergraduate through doctoral level students during the course of his career in education.

As a seasoned researcher, Dr. Basu has notably secured 12 research grants from private foundations, state and federal agencies to support his research as either a principal or co-principal investigator. He has also contributed 30 articles to various international peer reviewed journals, contributed chapters to six scientific books, and edited three books. He is presently a review editor for the Frontiers in Forests and Global Change journal. Additionally, Dr. Basu's work was presented approximately 50 times at various scientific conferences and he served as an invited speaker nationally and internationally, including in China and India.

Born to a family of professors in Kolkata, India, Dr. Basu received a bachelor's degree in agricultural sciences from B.C.K.V. (Agricultural University) in West Bengal, India. He subsequently immigrated to the U.S., where he earned a Master of Science in agronomy from Montana State University and a Doctor of Philosophy in environmental sciences from the University of Rhode Island. Dr. Basu went on to spend two years as a postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Plant Sciences at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

Supporting his career, Dr. Basu is a member of the board of directors for the American Council of Medicinally Active Plants. Highlighting his work, he received a Council on Undergraduate Research Biology Mentor Award from the Council on Undergraduate Research, Washington, D.C.

In 2013, Dr. Basu won an Outstanding Paper Award, which was presented to him by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research for a paper he published in the prestigious Science Magazine in 2010. More recently, he received the Hind Rattan Award, which translates to "Jewel of India," by the Non-Resident Indian Welfare Society of India in 2020. Outside of his accolades, Dr. Basu has been featured in the media several times, including in the India West newspaper and the Denver Post, on the front page of the National Science Foundation's website, and on various television stations, such as ABC, NBC and FOX.

An avid fan of modern Bengali music and songs, Dr. Basu enjoys playing the guitar, singing, traveling and cooking vegan dishes.
