Well regarded for his extensive background in employment and civil litigation, Mr. Atkins, of Deutsch, Atkins & Kleinfeldt, PC, has represented clients throughout New Jersey for more than 40 years. Bearing a particular specialization in employment law, especially as it pertains to executive-level clients, he has tried numerous cases in both the state and federal courts in New Jersey, as well as in the federal court in New York. As one of the largest plaintiff employment law firms in the tristate area, Mr. Atkins and his partners represent clients in an array of legal matters ranging from discrimination, harassment, retaliation and whistleblowing to family and medical leave act infractions, employment contracts and more. Additionally, his team provides expert counsel regarding various business and commercial disputes.

Mr. Atkins is a former attorney and partner of several other leading firms in Ridgefield and Hackensack, New Jersey. He notably began his career as a law clerk for the Superior Court of New Jersey in Hackensack from 1977 to 1978, after which he served as an associate with Roger A. Hauser in Englewood, New Jersey in 1978 and 1979. Next, he was an associate with Michael L. Scherby in 1979 and 1980 before being named a partner of Scherby & Atkins in 1980, where he remained until 1983. Mr. Atkins then served as a partner in the law firm of Contant, Schuber, Scherby & Atkins until 1989, when the firm was renamed Contant, Scherby & Atkins. From 2000 to 2005, Mr. Atkins was an attorney with Contant, Atkins & Fede, and from 2005 to 2020, an attorney with Deutsch Atkins P.C. Additionally, he was a municipal prosecutor for the Borough of Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey, between 1990 and 1998.

As an expert in his field, Mr. Atkins has frequently lectured on various employment topics and trial techniques as a guest lecturer at continuing education seminars, conferences and other events. He has also contributed numerous articles in scholarly law journals and was a commentator for Court TV for nearly a decade between 2000 and 2008.Additionally, Mr. Atkins was invited to speak before the American Association for Justice and the National Employment Lawyers Association, for which he expounded upon the topic of workplace fairness.

To prepare for his legal career, Mr. Atkins received a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Connecticut in 1974 and a Doctor of Jurisprudence at Seton Hall University in New Jersey in 1977. He has been admitted to practice by the U.S. District Court for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and the Supreme Court of the United States. He is also a court-certified mediator.

Mr. Atkins was elected by his peers as a fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America. He has also been a member of several other leading industry-related organizations, such as the American, New Jersey and New York Bar Associations, as well as the State of Florida Bar, the New Jersey chapter of the National Employment Lawyers Association, the New Jersey Association for Justice, and the AAJ as the former chairman of the employment law program. Additionally, Mr. Atkins is a past president of the Ridgefield Manufacturers Association.

Finding great satisfaction in representing plaintiffs that have been wronged by their employers, Mr. Atkins is aggressive in obtaining the settlements they deserve. His extensive portfolio has included obtaining a favorable verdict during a landmark gender discrimination case, which notably resulted in a $6.5 million settlement. An AV-Rated Attorney through Martindale-Hubbell since 1997, Mr. Atkins has also been named as a Super Lawyer in employment litigation every year since 2005 and was recently honored in the National Trial Lawyers Top 100 in the State of New Jersey in 2019.
