Ms. Tucker, a senior partner at Feldesman Tucker Leifer Fidell LLP in Washington, D.C., originally joined the prestigious law firm in 1972 as a partner. Focusing her practice on public interest, discrimination and family law, she is renowned for her expertise in complex matters of divorce, domestic violence and prenuptial matters. A hardworking and tenacious attorney, Ms. Tucker is passionate about helping disadvantaged society members, as well as empowering and protecting individuals, especially women, when it comes to their rights.
Entering law school during the civil rights movement, Ms. Tucker was initially hired as an attorney with Boasberg, Hewes, Klores & Kass. She subsequently served as a staff attorney for the Neighborhood Legal Services Program in Washington, became the deputy director of the services program for the western region of the Office of Economic Opportunity, and spent time as a special assistant to Representative Allard K. Lowenstein of the U.S. House of Representatives. Besides her work in the courtroom, Ms. Tucker briefly taught as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center and as a lecturer at the Catholic University Columbus School of Law in Washington. She also helped develop course material for several law courses.
As an extension of her work, Ms. Tucker has written articles in various peer-reviewed journals. She also contributed an article about current events in the field of law during the 1960s and early 1970s. Additionally, Ms. Tucker wrote an article, "Justice for Sneakers," which was distributed by the Legal Services Program through its library.
A devoted civic advocate, Ms. Tucker has been active with the D.C. Bar Foundation as both a vice president and president and has been affiliated with the Federal Judicial Center Foundation as the chair of its board of directors. As a civil and women's rights activist, she also chaired the Mayor's Commission on Violence Against Women, was a founding member of the National Women's Law Center, and an appointed commissioner for the U.S. Commission on Child and Family Welfare. With respect to education, she was also active with the Georgetown University Law Center as a member of the board of visitors and board of regents. Ms. Tucker was also recently featured in a video from the Veteran Feminists of America in 2020, through which she talked about the women's movement, her career and other pressing topics.
Born in Philadelphia, Ms. Tucker attained a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Texas in 1962 and a Bachelor of Laws at Georgetown University Law Center in 1965. She has been admitted to practice law in both the District of Columbia and the state of California, as well as before the Supreme Court of the United States.
Ms. Tucker has benefited from membership with several key professional organizations. Most notably, she is an elected fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. She is also a member of the D.C. Bar Association, where she was instrumental as the organization's first female president. Ms. Tucker is also aligned with the National Conference of Bar Presidents, for which she also served as the first female president.
Highlighting her career, Ms. Tucker has been the recipient of several honors, including an Exceptional Achievement Award from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Lawyer Magazine. Likewise, she won the Margaret Brent Woman Lawyers of Achievement Award and the Robert Drinan Distinguished Service Award from the American Bar Association. Among other prestigious awards, she was featured in Law and Politics Magazine among the Top 50 Washington Women Super Lawyers and was featured in Washingtonian Magazine as one of 75 Best Lawyers in Washington. Furthermore, Ms. Tucker received an Honorary Doctor of Laws from the D.C. School of Law.
