Distinguished for his 60-year career as a physician and teacher, Dr. DeSanctis is highly regarded for his tenure at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Currently retired from the practice of medicine, he was designated by the aforementioned hospital as an honorary physician and director of clinical cardiology emeritus in 2014, having operated as a physician from 1970 to 2014. In addition, he had worked for Massachusetts General Hospital as the director of clinical cardiology from 1981 to 1998, the founder and director of the coronary unit from 1967 to 1981 and an assistant and associate physician between 1962 and 1970. Despite his retirement, Dr. DeSanctis continues to mentor young trainees in medicine and cardiology.

Alongside his positions at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. DeSanctis has taught at the Harvard Medical School as an assistant professor in medicine, an assistant clinical professor of medicine and an associate professor of medicine from the early 1960s through 1973. He later advanced to become a professor of medicine, as well as the Evelyn and James Jenks and Paul Dudley White professor of medicine before accepting professor emeritus status in 2014. To accompany his medical knowledge, Dr. DeSanctis authored "On Being a Physician" in 2020 in addition to co-authoring "The Practice of Cardiology" in 1989 and "Cardiac Clinic-Pathological Conferences of the Massachusetts General Hospital" in 1972.

Abundantly celebrated throughout the course of his career, Dr. DeSanctis was bestowed with the Partner Excellence Award and Distinguished Fiji Award from Phi Gamma Delta in 2013 and 2008, respectively, and Letterman's Lifetime Achievement Award from the University of Arizona in 2010. He has also been recognized with the Trustee's Award from Massachusetts General Physicians Organization in 2006 and the Glorney-Raisbeck Award from the New York Academy of Medicine in 2003, as well as the American College of Cardiology's Distinguished Fellow Award and Gifted Teacher Award in 1991. Likewise, the American Heart Association honored him with the 2006 Trustee's Gold Medal, 2003 Master Clinician Award, 1999 Paul Dudley Award and 1996 David Littman Award. Dr. DeSanctis likewise received the Decorated Order of Dynasty of Alawite Morocco in 1989 and Harvard Medical School's Excellence in Clinical Teaching Award in 1990.

Dr. DeSanctis treasures the humanistic aspects of medicine, as he notes the doctor-patient relationship is one of the most important factors in his field. Along with building relationships, he believes the satisfaction of interactivity with so many outstanding young trainees in an educational setting is the most rewarding part of his work. Initially inspired to become a physician from the influence of his general practitioner in Tucson, Arizona, he attributes his success today to a love of people and a love of medicine. With this sentiment, Dr. DeSanctis was invited to address Harvard Medical School graduates on his decades-spanning career, which he made into a booklet that encompasses his thoughts on the practice of medicine, which is now in its second edition.

A fellow of the American College of Physicians, Dr. DeSanctis is affiliated with numerous professional organizations, including the American College of Cardiology, the New York Academy of Medicine, the National Academy of Medicine, the American Clinical Climatology Society, the Association of American Physicians, and the American Heart Association. He is also associated with the Winchester Country Club, Knights of Malta and Phi Gamma Delta. From 1979 to 1980, Dr. DeSanctis was elected as the president of the New England Cardiovascular Society.

At the beginning of his professional journey, Dr. DeSanctis earned a Bachelor of Science, summa cum laude, from the University of Arizona in 1951 and a Doctor of Medicine, magna cum laude, from the Harvard Medical School in 1955. Serving as an intern at the Massachusetts General Hospital for one year, he subsequently enlisted in the United States Navy Reserve Medical Corps as an officer and assistant to the attending physician to Congress from 1956 to 1958. Following his military service, he completed his medical requirements at the Massachusetts General Hospital as a resident and clinical and research fellow in cardiology from 1960 to 1962. Furthermore, Dr. Romero received an Honorary Doctor of Science from Wilkes College in 1984 and the University of Arizona in 1999.
