Briefly teaching at Saint Louis University, Dr. Murphy likewise operated as a technical analyst for McDonnell Aircraft in Saint Louis.
Utilizing his wealth of expertise, Dr. Murphy has further flourished as a visiting professor at Hebei University in China and the University of Salzburg in Austria and at the Academy of Science of East Germany as an exchange scientist representing the U.S. National Academy of Science. Over the years, he has additionally participated at various professional conferences and seminars on statistics and penned numerous articles for academic and other professional journals. Active in local politics during the 1960s and 1970s, Dr. Murphy is grateful to have made a difference in his community.
Dr. Murphy prepared for his career by obtaining a bachelor's degree at Rockhurst College in 1957, followed by a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in mathematics at Saint Louis University in 1962 and 1966, respectively. Years later, he earned a Master of Science in computational finance at Oregon Graduate Institute in 2000. Initially drawn to mathematics while pursuing his undergraduate degree, he was particularly inspired by the head of the department. Although he was not sure if he wanted to teach after his graduation, Dr. Murphy ultimately found the field of education to be incredibly satisfying.
Dr. Murphy is a member of the American Mathematics Society and the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics. He is also affiliated with the Mathematics Association of America, with which he was appointed as the chairman of the northeast section, the vice-chairman and the associate editor of Mathematical Monthly. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Murphy has been featured in the 24th edition of Who's Who in the East.
