Some of Dr. Witherspoon's other noteworthy positions previously included his work as the president of Sandco Petroleum Corporation in Dallas and as the vice president of Wynn Oil Company in Dallas.
A prolific writer, Dr. Witherspoon has authored numerous works on his particular area of expertise, including "Residential Foundation Performance" in 2000 and "Infrastructure Evaluation, Maintenance and Repair" in 2008. Apart from his accomplishments, he currently holds several patents pending in his field. Dr. Witherspoon is also active in his community as a parishioner of his local house of worship, Van Alstyne Church of Christ, where he is involved with the ministry.
Born in Dallas, Dr. Witherspoon studied locally, earning a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering at Southern Methodist University in 1971. Continuing his studies, he received a Master of Science in management and administrative science at the University of Texas at Dallas in 1979, followed by postgraduate coursework at Southern Methodist University between 1979 and 1981, and a Doctor of Philosophy in civil engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington in 2006. Dr. Witherspoon notably served for nine years in the U.S. Naval Reserve during his studies, beginning in 1971. In the state of Texas, he is a licensed professional engineer and licensed irrigator, a registered surveyor and professional geoscientist, and a certified structural engineer through the Structural Engineering Certification Board. Likewise, he was registered as a geotechnical engineering diplomate through the Academy of Geo-Professionals.
Supported by several industry related organizations, Dr. Witherspoon has been actively engaged as a board director of the National Association of Waterproofers and Structural Repair Contractors. Likewise, he is a past president of the National Foundation Repair Association and the International Association of Foundation Drilling. Dr. Witherspoon is also active with several other professional societies, including the American Association of Civil Engineers, the American Association of Petroleum Engineers and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.
Recognized as a weightlifting state champion in 1984, 1987, 1989, 1990 and 1994, Dr. Witherspoon supported his avocation as a member of the North Texas Olympic Weightlifting Association in Dallas, where he earned distinction as the president from 1975 to 1995. He also received a Pan American Gold Medal from the master's division of Olympic Weightlifting in 1990, 2000, and 2014, and was the World Cup Champion in 2015. In recognition of his career accomplishments, Dr. Witherspoon received a Contractor of the Year Award from the International Association of Foundation Drilling in 1997.
