After earning a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology from Yale University in 1993, Dr. Hawkins studied premedicine at Bryn Mawr College. He subsequently obtained a Doctorate in Medicine from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in 2000. Dr. Hawkins completed an emergency medicine residency at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine from 2000 to 2003.
Dr. Hawkins began his career in 2003 as a partner with Mountain Emergency Physicians and served as an emergency physician at Carolinas HealthCare System Blue Ridge until 2015. He has also served as an adjunct assistant professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an assistant professor at Western Carolina University, and the department chairman at Carolinas HealthCare Blue Ridge. Dr. Hawkins has excelled as the medical director for Burke County Emergency Services, medical advisor at the North Carolina Outward Bound School, executive editor of Wilderness Medicine Magazine, medical advisor for Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI), medical director of Western Piedmont Community College, medical director of Starfish Aquatics Institute, and medical advisor of the Student Conservation Association.
In addition to his medical work, he is known as an organizational innovator. In 2007, Dr. Hawkins became the founder of the Appalachian Center for Wilderness Medicine, which he has also served as board chair. He is also co-founder and director of the Wilderness EMS Medical Director Course, as well as founder and first Chief of the Appalachian Mountain Rescue Team, the first fully credentialed Mountain Rescue Association team in the American southeast. He is also founder and course director of the highly regarded Carolina Wilderness EMS Externship.
He has been additionally active as an owner and partner at Vertical Medicine Resources, the medical director for North Carolina State Parks, an associate professor of emergency medicine at Wake Forest School of Medicine, and an emergency physician for Catawba Valley Medical Center. In addition to these impressive credits, Dr. Hawkins is also board certified in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Emergency Medicine through the American Board of Emergency Medicine.
Dr. Hawkins is also a member of the American Anthropological Association and a Fellow of the Society of Applied Anthropology, as well as faculty in the Department of Anthropology at Wake Forest University. He is the Chair of the American College of Emergency Physicians Section of Medical Humanities. His 2004 publication "Emergency Medicine Narratives" is considered a landmark medical humanities study in emergency medicine. In the coming years, Dr. Hawkins would like to witness a greater integration of cultural understanding into clinicians' daily practices in medicine and public health.
