Having come of age among a family of educators, Dr. Holmes-Sutton initially aspired to become a teacher in her own right. However, during the course of her education, she realized that she could exert a greater impact on students and families by advocating for the educational profession as a whole, and by developing her leadership skills. She went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts from Hawaii Loa College, a Master of Education from the University of Nevada and a Doctor of Education in educational leadership from the University of Nevada. Dr. Holmes-Sutton is also nationally certified through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
Throughout the course of her professional career, Dr. Holmes-Sutton has worked in education for more than two decades. She began as an early childhood teacher for Clark County School District and subsequently became a kindergarten teacher at Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy. Dr. Holmes-Sutton has also worked in various leadership capacities for Rainbow Dreams Academy, International Experience USA, the Nevada State Board of Education, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, and the Nevada State Public Charter School Authority Board. In 2017, she established the Nevada National Board Professional Learning Institute: Empowering Teachers as Leaders & Learners, where she serves as the Executive Director. In this position, Dr. Holmes-Sutton strives to provide a more diverse group of students and educators with greater opportunities in the education industry. Dr. Holmes-Sutton is currently the Executive Director of Teach Plus Nevada.
In honor of her indelible efforts, Dr. Holmes-Sutton has been listed in Cambridge Who's Who Among Executive and Professional Women in Teaching and Education, and Who's Who Among American Teachers & Educators. She was also previously appointed to the Nevada State Board of Education by Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval. As a dedicated leader within her community, Dr. Holmes-Sutton was recognized as the University of Nevada, Las Vegas 2020 College of Education Alumna of the Year.
