SAN ANTONIO, TX, November 19, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present J. Marvin Smith III with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Smith celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Having practiced as a cardiovascular surgeon in Texas for more than 40 years, Dr. Smith serves as the owner of Cardiothoracic Surgical Associates in San Antonio. In this capacity, he specializes in treating patients suffering from various stages of cardiovascular disease by performing general thoracic surgery, open-heart surgery, coronary bypass surgery and valve replacement. Dr. Smith is also a founding director of TexSan Heart Hospital and a past board manager for the Bexar County Hospital District. Additionally, he is a tenured clinical professor of surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.

While attending his first year of medical school, Dr. Smith was introduced to Dr. Denton A. Cooley, a pioneer in the field who was the first to conduct a human heart transplant in North America. Featured on the cover of Life Magazine for the success of his procedure, Dr. Smith became fascinated by the field and chose to focus his medical endeavors on cardiovascular surgery. He later had the opportunity to study under Dr. Cooley, who later became his greatest mentor.

Dr. Smith has served in both the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force. Deeply invested in his community, he is the past chairman of the board of directors for the Texas Ranger Association Foundation. Dr. Smith is also an emeritus director with the San Antonio Medical Foundation.

Drawing inspiration from the example of his father, a family practice physician, Dr. Smith completed his undergraduate work and, in 1972, received a Doctor of Medicine from Tulane University. He subsequently completed an internship at the University of Texas Southwest Medical School in Dallas, a residency in surgery at the University of Texas-San Antonio and a second residency in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at Texas Heart Institute in Houston between 1972 and 1979.

Dr. Smith is an elected fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Surgery. Involved with numerous other significant professional organizations throughout his career, he served as the president of the Bexar County Medical Society in 1998. Dr. Smith and his father were notably the one father and son pair to both serve in that position for the organization.

Dr. Smith has been active on the board of directors of the Tulane Medical Alumni Association and enjoys memberships with the American Medical Association, the Texas Medical Association, the Society of Air Force Clinical Surgeons, the San Antonio Surgical Society and, among others, the Texas Surgical Society. He is also a past president of the Denton A. Cooley Cardiovascular Surgical Society. Honoring his service in the military, Dr. Smith was decorated with a U.S. Air Force Commendation Medal. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
