Richard H. Schwartz, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Schwartz PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Schwartz celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Dr. Schwartz began his career teaching civil engineering as a lecturer at the City College of New York from 1956 to 1959, during which time he earned a Bachelor of Civil Engineering in 1956 and a Master of Civil Engineering in 1958. Subsequently, he departed from education when he enlisted as a private in the U.S. Army in 1959. Upon the completion of his service, he returned to teaching as an instructor at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey from 1961 to 1966, where he graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in applied mechanics in 1967.

Upon obtaining his PhD, Dr. Schwartz accepted a position as assistant professor of mechanical engineering at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn until 1970 at which point he worked as associate professor at Staten Island Community College from 1970 to 1976. Ultimately, he gained tenure at the College of Staten Island, for which he excelled as an associate professor from 1976 to 1995 and a professor from 1995 to 1999. Dr. Schwartz is currently recognized as professor emeritus at the College of Staten Island.

Though he was a professor of mathematics for most of his professional career, Dr. Schwartz is also passionate about vegetarianism, veganism, Judaism and environmental issues, including climate change. Over the years, he sought to inspire and educate others on these topics. While teaching at the College of Staten Island, Dr. Schwartz established a special course titled "Mathematics and the Environment" in order to relate and educate about critical environmental issues.

Dr. Schwartz is also an accomplished author, having written works such as "Judaism and Global Survival," "Judaism and Vegetarianism," "Mathematics and Global Survival," "Who Stole My Religion?: Revitalizing Judaism and Applying Jewish Values to Help Heal Our Imperiled Planet" and "Vegan Revolution: Saving Our World, Revitalizing Judaism." Notably, he has over 250 published articles to his name. In addition, Dr. Schwartz was the associate producer of a 2007 video documentary titled "A Sacred Duty: Applying Jewish Values to Help the World."

His cover story "Why Jews Should Be Vegans" appeared in the August 9, 2021 issue of the Jerusalem Report and his co-authored cover story "Climate Change: An Existential Threat To Humanity and How We Can Survive" was in the September 30 issue of the Jerusalem Report. He is currently writing two books: (1) "Restoring and Transforming the Ancient Jewish New Year For Animals: An Idea Whose Time Has Come" and (2) a 20th anniversary edition of his book "Judaism and Global Survival."

Dr. Schwartz is a recipient of the Outstanding Achievement in Math Education Award, which was presented by the New York State Math Association of Two Year Colleges in 1991. He has been further honored as the Jewish Vegetarian of the Year by the Jewish Vegetarians of North America in 1987. Thereafter, Dr. Schwartz was inducted into the Vegetarian Hall of Fame by the North American Vegetarian Society in 2005.
